Women’s Basketball Prepares for First Road Game at Canisius

LORETTO, Pa. –
Saint Francis University women's basketball hits the road for the first time in the 2023-24 season with a matchup at Canisius on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
 
Saint Francis Quick Hits
After missing the 2022-23 season due to injury, Kaitlyn Maxwell scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point territory. She tied a career-high in three-point field goals, fell one shy of her career-high in total field goals and was three points shy of her career-high. She scored the most points on opening night by any player in the Northeast Conference. Harris Robinson grabbed nine rebounds and Marina Artero added eight to lead Saint Francis to a 46-37 advantage on the boards against Robert Morris. Yanessa Boyd led freshmen in scoring with eight points, followed by Kendall Carruthers' six.
 
Last Time Out
Saint Francis fell to former NEC rival Robert Morris 61-50 on opening night of the season. The Colonials opened a 37-21 lead at halftime behind a 20-6 advantage in the second quarter. Saint Francis stormed back in the third quarter with an 18-4 run and cut the deficit to 45-42 in the frame. In the fourth quarter, the Red Flash chipped away at the Colonials' lead and were within two points, 52-50, with 3:45 remaining before a 9-0 run clinched Robert Morris its victory.
 
Scouting Canisius
The Golden Griffins dropped their season opener to Buffalo 69-60. Mackenzie Amalia led the scoring attack with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Sisi Eleko had a 15-point, 19-rebound double-double. Eleko was a Preseason All-MAAC Third Team selection this season after she was MAAC All-Rookie Team last season. Brooklyn Thrash also added 12 points in the loss to Buffalo. Canisius was selected to finish ninth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
All-Time vs. Canisius
The Golden Griffins own a 5-3 all-time advantage over the Red Flash since the first meeting in 1987. Saint Francis won the first two meetings before Canisius went on a five-game winning streak in the series between 1988-2015. Saint Francis won the last game, played in 2016, behind a matchup-high 95 points scored.
 
Around the NEC
All-eight NEC teams that played a Division I opponent lost in its first game of the season, with the closest game a 58-55 loss for Merrimack against UAlbany. Fairleigh Dickinson fell to Big 10 opponent Iowa 102-46 and was the only NEC team to play a Power Five opponent in its opener.  Le Moyne dropped its first game as a Division I program 69-49 to Colorado State.
