The Saint Francis bowling team posted a 3-1 record on Sunday, finishing the Northeast Conference tournament in third place with a 5-2 record against conference opponents at the Bowlero Bowling Lanes in North Brunswick, N.J.
IT WAS A TEAM THING
The Red Flash bowled like a team throughout the weekend, showing that anyone in the lineup can be a valuable contributor at any given time. Saturday started with solid outings from seniors
Samantha Timm and
Kassidy Landwehr, with help from sophomore
Mackenzie Keane along the way.
Sunday saw the Frankies get contributions from a variety of different individuals. The beginning of the day saw stellar performances from Keane and senior
Marissa Metcalfe, while the Flash finished the day with Landwehr and Timm leading the charge.
Â
Head coach
Ashley Bingham noted how the team aspect improved compared to the last two tournaments.
"We did a phenomenal job sticking to who we are as a team," the fourth-year coach said following the tournament. "We did much better at conquering the defeats and overcoming adversity, which helped us come together as a team and win."
KEANE BACK IN JERSEY
The tournament was held in North Brunswick, N.J., home to reigning NEC Rookie of the Year
Mackenzie Keane.
The East Brunswick, N.J. native contributed in the latter half of the lineup throughout the tournament, switching between the fourth spot and the anchor role with senior
Kassidy Landwehr. Her best game came in the sixth match of the weekend against Niagara, where she filled 11 of 12 opportunities to tally a 221 pinfall in the 947-922 win over the Purple Eagles. She bowled four 200-pin games and anchored in wins over No. 11 Duquesne, Niagara and Wagner.
CONFERENCE POLL IMPLICATIONS
Saint Francis was slotted as the seventh-best program among eight NEC squads in Thursday's conference polls, and this weekend's performance should give voters something to think about.
Not only did Coach Bingham's team win when least expected to, but their losses didn't come by much, as they stayed competitive to the very end.
It helps that the Red Flash defeated top-seeded Duquesne and third-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson on the first day, in addition to their wins over LIU and Niagara to close the tournament.
UP NEXT
The Red Flash will return to the lanes next weekend, traveling to compete in the three-day Hawk Classic, co-hosted by Monmouth University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, on November 17-19. The Frankies will face conference foes in No. 11 Sacred Heart, No. 15 Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 24 Merrimack, as well as ranked non-conference opponents in No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Youngstown State and No. 25 Morgan State.
