LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University women's basketball travels to its second Power Five opponent of the season, Pitt, on Wednesday, Nov. 29 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
Saint Francis Quick Hits
Kendall Carruthers was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career. She currently ranks fifth in the NEC with 12.7 points per game and has at least 16 points in the last three games. She was the first Red Flash player to top 20 points this season with 21 against Lafayette.
Destini Ward had her second 14-point effort in the last three games and raised her season total to 7.0 per game. She leads Saint Francis with 1.5 steals per game, which is 10th in the NEC.
Julianna Gibson produced her first double-digit rebounding game with 10 against Lafayette. She is up to 5.5 rebounds per game, which is second behind
Marina Artero's 6.0.
Last Time Out
Saint Francis fell in its closest game of the season 60-58 at home against Lafayette. Saint Francis fell behind 12-4 early before ending the first quarter on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 15. The Leopards outscored the Red Flash 18-7 in the second quarter and took a 33-22 lead into the half. Lafayette opened a lead as large as 19 points, 43-24, before a 31-9 Red Flash run across the third and fourth quarter saw Saint Francis open a 55-51 lead with 4:53 remaining. Lafayette regained a slight 60-58 edge with 1:14 remaining. The Red Flash had the ball in the final possession but was unable to get a shot off before dropping the two-point game.
Scouting Pitt
The Panthers hold a 2-5 overall record with victories over Yale, 79-74, and Northern Kentucky, 88-57. Saint Francis and Pitt faced one common opponent, Coppin State, and both suffered a defeat 70-34 and 61-56, respectively. Liatu King leads Pitt with 20.3 points, 12.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 2.1 blocks per game. Her rebounds ranks fourth in the NCAA Division I, her blocks rank 28th and her points rank 32nd. She has a double-double in five of the seven games this season. Rapuluchi Ayodele ranks 26th in the NCAA Division I with 10.3 rebounds and she adds 8.6 points per game. Aislin Malcolm averages 11.3 points per game, while Marley Washenitz leads the team with 3.7 assists per game.
All-Time vs. Pitt
Pitt holds a 10-3 all-time advantage over Saint Francis since the first meeting in 1990. Saint Francis earned its victories in 1995, 1997 and 2010. Pitt is riding a current four-game winning streak, which is the longest in matchup history. In the last meeting, played in 2018, Pitt took a 78-75 overtime victory.
Around the NEC
As of Nov. 28, six of the nine NEC team earned at least one victory still led by Sacred Heart's four. Fairleigh Dickinson earned its first victory over the weekend 64-59 over Rider, while LIU earned its first 60-53 over Hampton. Saint Francis, Stonehill and Wagner remains the three conference teams looking for its first victory.
Maxwell to Miss the Remainder of the 2023-24 Season
Senior guard
Kaitlyn Maxwell will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season after an injury sustained against Coppin State. She is set to undergo surgery in December. Prior to the injury, Maxwell began the campaign with an 18-point and 13-point outing in the first two games. She failed to record a point against Coppin State and finished the season 11-of-27 (40.7-percent) from the field and 7-of-12 (58.3-percent) from three-point territory.
