Gregory's Strong Finish Helps Cohen, Saint Francis MBB Celebrate 1,000th Point On A Winning Note Against SFBK

BOX SCORE WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Josh Cohen (Lincroft, N.J.) registered 21 points and 12 rebounds, including scoring his 1,000 point in the first half, but it was freshman Cam Gregory (Accokeek, Md.) that gave the Red Flash the lead for good en route to a 72-64 win against St. Francis Brooklyn in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's basketball action on Thursday afternoon.
>> Gregory, who had an NEC career-high 10 points, registered seven points in the decisive run to lift the Red Flash to the win. The freshman gave the team lead it would not relinquish on a driving layup with 11:29 left in the contest.
>> Cohen scored on a layup with 16:54 left in the first half to become the 43rd player in program history to score 1,000 points in his career.
>> Maxwell Land (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 16 points while Ronell Giles, Jr. (Brandywine, Md.) chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME
After the Terriers tied the game at 48, Saint Francis went on a decisive 15-4 run to take a 63-52 advantage with 5:17 on the clock.  Gregory powered the run with seven points while Land had four points in this stretch.

St. Francis Brooklyn cut the margin to four points at 63-59 with 3:39 left, but Brad McCabe (Manasquan, N.J.) drained two free throws and Land scored a basket to retake an eight-point lead with 2:13 on the clock.  The Red Flash sealed the win by hitting 5 of 6 from the foul line.

FLASH QUOTES
"I'm pleased with the way these guys came out and executed for 40 minutes. The group that we had in there at the end played with poise and we executed down the stretch. The margin for error is so slim that we have to eliminate our mistakes. In our last four games we have either had the lead late or within one or two possessions that that is the way these games will be played from here on out. Our guys need to understand the details of what it is going to take to win a basketball game we need to make sure we take care of the basketball and get great shots and on the flip side we need to eliminate second-chance points." – head coach Rob Krimmel on the game

"We have a quick turnaround at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The goal is to have the focus at practice on Friday to be able to do what we need to do on Saturday. We can't get to 1 o'clock until we do prepare for LIU and have the opportunity to go 2-0 on a road trip." – Krimmel on the next game

"People see the points and the see the rebounds and the see what he does from a production standpoint, but the thing I am most proud of is how he has grown as a leader, how he has grown as a young man, both on and off the court. He has really embraced that leadership role. To celebrate 1,000 points after a win is much more enjoyable." – Krimmel on Josh Cohen

"We believe at Saint Francis in development. You come in and some can play right away and score a lot of points as a freshman, but if you stick with the plan that we have both team concept and individual development, we are going to make sure that you are a better player. It's also a product of Josh's hard work, skill set and his desire to be great." – Krimmel on Cohen's development

FLASH MOMENTS
Trailing 12-4 with 15:27 left in the first half, Saint Francis went on a 23-10 run to take a 27-22 lead with 6:06 remaining in the half. Cohen had six points and Marlon Hargis (Mays Landing, N.J.) registered five points in the spurt. Gregory notched a 3-pointer for his only points until his seven points in the final 12 minutes of the game.

FLASH NUGGETS

Cohen notched his third-straight 20-point performance, 14th of the season and 18th of his career. The 12 rebounds tie his NEC career high, while it is his fifth double-double of the season and 11 of his career. It is the third time this season he has had 20 points and 10 rebounds in a game and fourth time in his career. His 562 points are the 14th most in single-season program history and just two shy of Isaiah Blackmon's 564 in 2019-20 for the most points scored in a season under head coach Rob Krimmel. His 213 rebounds this season are also the ninth most in the Krimmel era.

Gregory notched his second career double-figure point game with his 10 points against the Terriers. It is the sixth time this season he has scored at least eight points in a game, but his 10-point performance on Thursday joins only his 15 points at Ohio State on December 3 as his only two 10+ point games. The freshman also added three rebounds and two assists.

Land, who also had six rebounds, has scored double figures in four-straight games and 11 of the 13 conference games this season. It was the eighth time this year he has recorded over 15 points in a game. The junior needs 17 points for 800 points in his career.

Giles registered his fifth 10+ game of the season and his first in six games when he had a season-high 16 points against St. Francis Brooklyn on January 20. The junior has 27 games with at least 10 points in his career.

Saint Francis registered just its second road win of the season with both games coming in the state of New York.

Back to Cohen's milestone, along with becoming the 43rd player in program history to register 1,000 points in his career, he is the fifth to reach the feat under Krimmel and the first since Isaiah Blackmon did it against LIU in the NEC Semifinals on March 9, 2018. It also marked the first time a player reached the feat against an NEC opponent in the regular season since Devin Sweetney scored his 1,000th point against LIU on February 19, 2009. Saint Francis is now 4-1 in games a player scores his grand point under Krimmel.

With his 20 points, Cohen has already moved up to 41st place with 1,018 career points. The redshirt junior is also within another milestone, needing 10 rebounds to reach 500 boards for his career. He would become the 29th player in team history to grab 500 rebounds in a career and the 20th player to have 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

NEXT TIME OUT

Saint Francis returns to action on Saturday at LIU for its final regular season home game of the year. Game time is 1 p.m.
