SELECT GAME NOTES VS. WAGNER (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
OPENING TIP
• Saturday's game between Saint Francis and Wagner marks the 83rd meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1956-57 season.
• Despite the Red Flash ending a five-game losing streak to the Seahawks with a 68-63 win in Staten Island in January, Wagner holds a 42-40 edge in the all-time series.
• Saint Francis holds a 24-14 lead in Loretto.
THE WORD ON WAGNER
• The Seahawks come into the contest 14-12 overall and 7-8 in NEC play after defeating Stonehill 54-44 on Thursday.
• Delonnie Hunt and Javier Ezquerrra paced Wagner with 13 points.
• Hunt leads the team with 11.1 points per game.
LAST TIME WE MET
• Landon Moore gave Saint Francis the lead for good midway through the second half and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 31 seconds to propel Saint Francis past Wagner 68-63 on January 7. Moore registered 12 of his 15 points in the second half.
• Josh Cohen led the Red Flash with a NEC career-high 27 points along with seven rebounds. Maxwell Land added 17 points and five rebounds.
• Delonnie Hunt paced the Seahawks with 20 points, while Brandon Brown (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Rob Taylor II (10 points) also posted doubl figures.
LAST TIME OUT
• Redshirt junior Josh Cohen registered 19 of his NEC career-high 31 points in the second half to propel Saint Francis men's basketball past FDU 82-72 and clinch an NEC Quarterfinal home game on Thursday.
• Junior Maxwell Land also registered an NEC career high with 24 points, while freshman Cam Gregory chipped in 11 points in the winning effort.
• With the win, Saint Francis clinched a home game in the NEC Tournament in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
• The Red Flash is now 9-4 overall at DeGol Arena and 6-1 in NEC play
• Saint Francis, who has won nine league games seven times in the last 11 years, will finish with a winning NEC record for the fifth time under head coach Rob Krimmel thanks to the victory.
A SFU WIN WOULD
• Match the team's longest winning streak of the season at four games after the Red Flash won four-consecutive games to start the NEC slate
• Sweep the three teams from New York (LIU, St. Francis Brooklyn, Wagner) for only the second time in team history and the first since the 1989-90 season
• Be the team's eighth win in its last nine home games
• Give the team double-digit wins at home for the fifth time under head coach Rob Krimmel (2014-15, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20)
• Give the team 10+ wins in the NEC season for the fifth time under Krimmel (2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20)
TRENDING UP
• Redshirt junior Josh Cohen is averaging 27.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in the team's last three home games. In that stretch, he has registered 31 points against FDU (February 23), 27 points against Sacred Heart (February 9) and 24 points against Merrimack (February 11). Those are his three highest outputs at home besides his 40-point outburst against Lehigh on November 21.
• Along with his points, the redshirt junior has 43 rebounds and 18 assists in his last five games. He has three games with at least nine rebounds, two double-doubles, a five assist and a six-assist performance in that stretch. After back-to-back 17-point performances to start the month, Cohen scored 20 points in four of his last five games and is averaging 23.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists in that stretch.
• Cohen's 31 points and junior Maxwell Land's 24 points marked the second time this season the Red Flash had a player go off for 30 points and another post at least 20 points. Cohen had 30 points and freshman Landon Moore registered a career-high 25 points at No. 25 Miami on December 17.
• Land posted back-to-back 20-point games for the second time in his career. The junior registered back-to-back identical 20-point games at CCSU and Sacred Heart in the final two regular season games last season to turn the trick for the first time. He is looking for his first three-straight 20-point games of his career. Land has four 20-point games this season with three of the four coming at DeGol Arena, including his career-best 26 points against Hartford on November 12 and his NEC career-high 24 points against FDU on February 23.
• Land has also registered double figures in six-straight games and 13 of the 15 league games this season. The junior is averaging 14.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in league games .
• In addition, the junior has posted double figures in 12 of the 13 home games this season including all seven NEC games. He is averaging 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game at home.
• Freshman Cam Gregory has posted three-straight games with double figures in points and registered his first 10+ game at DeGol Arena with 11 points against FDU in his last contest. He made a career-high six of seven from the free throw line against the Knights. The freshman also had 10 points at St. Francis Brooklyn on February 16 and 13 points at LIU two days later. Gregory shot 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) in the three games after shooting 11-for-28 (39.2 percent) in the seven prior games since returning to the floor after an illness. Gregory registered a career-high 15 points against Ohio State on December 3.
• Redshirt junior Brad McCabe has four double figure performances in his last seven games and is averaging 9.1 points per game in that stretch. He had three-straight double-figure games for the first time in his career before his streak was stopped against Merrimack on February 11. He has recorded a season-high 14 points twice in that span.
• Saint Francis is 9-2 this season when it makes at least eight baskets from behind the arc, which is also the total needed to give away free a free Big Mac at home games. The team is 8-0 at home when this happens. The squad had nine against LIU in its last game to earn its first win when hitting eight 3's in a game.
• In four of the seven NEC home games, the Red Flash has connected on double digits from downtown. The Loretto program is hitting at a 53.4 clip (62-for-116) from behind the arc in NEC home games. The team was shooting 57.2 percent from the floor but hit only 7 of 20 from downtown in its last home game against Merrimack on February 11.
• While the Petula Clark will tell you that you can forget all your troubles and forget all of your cares and go downtown, there is another area that has been key to the Red Flash success this season. The team is 9-7 when it has more points or even number of points inside the paint. The team has won twice when it did not win the paint battle (CCSU on December 29 and FDU on February 23).
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• With its win against FDU on Thursday, Saint Francis clinched a home game in the Northeast Conference Tournament in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
• Merrimack has won the regular season and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament. In addition, the Warriors opponent is the only one that is set at the moment with LIU being the No. 8 seed.
• The Red Flash positioning might be determined even before most of the warm ups take place on Saturday with the other three games tipping off at 1 p.m. The opponent is another story because a Wagner win or loss effects most of the tiebreaker scenarios.
• If FDU defeats St. Francis Brooklyn at home, the Frankies will be locked into the No. 3 spot, but if the Terriers down the Knights then the Red Flash can move up to the No. 2 spot with a win.
• The difference between those two seeds is where the game would be played if all the higher seeds win in the NEC Quarterfinals, which could be a factor for the Red Flash. The squad is 9-4 overall at home and 6-1 in league play compared to 3-12 on the road and 3-5 in NEC play. Granted the squad has won its last two on the road.
• Opponents for the final three quarterfinal games have not been determined with Sacred Heart, CCSU, Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn all possible opponents for the Loretto program.
• None of the four teams vying for the final postseason game control their own destiny and need something else to happen for it to earn the final home spot.
• What we do know is that Saint Francis will host at least one tournament game for the seventh time under head coach Rob Krimmel and the first since the 2019-20 season.
• The Red Flash is 4-2 at home in the postseason under Krimmel.
• Saint Francis is currently 5-0 against the teams from New York (LIU, St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner). With a win against the Seahawks, the squad would sweep the Empire State in NEC play for the second time in program history in a season a home-and-home series takes place.
• In 1989-90 is the only other time the squad went a perfect 6-0 against the state. The squad won all the matchups against the three teams in 1982-83, but once squared off once against each team that season.
• Saint Francis is looking to end a four-game losing streak in the final regular season game of the season.
• It will be just a fourth time under Krimmel Saint Francis will finish the regular season at home. The team is 2-1 at home in the final regular season home game of the season and 0-7 on the road.
• Both regular season ending wins were in years the team played in the postseason.
• When the team makes the postseason, the team is 5-0 at DeGol Arena and 5-6 on the road in that final weekend. The Loretto program is also 0-4 in the last two games in the two seasons the team has not made the postseason under Krimmel.
• It is also just the second time under the coach the Red Flash has played its final two contests of the regular season at home, joining the 2016-17 season. The team has been on the road five times for the final two games of the season and four times the squad had a split weekend with a home and away game.
• Prior to the regular season finale against Wagner on Saturday, the Red Flash honor redshirt seniors Marlon Hargis and Myles Thompson, redshirt junior Luke Ruggery and team manager Matt Kenner.
