LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University men's and women's tennis each won their conference opener 5-2 and 4-3, respectively, over St. Francis Brooklyn. Women's tennis has won three matches in a row, while men's tennis has won two.
Women's: Saint Francis 5, St. Francis Brooklyn 2
Doubles
St. Francis Brooklyn took the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. The Red Flash earned a dominant No. 2 victory y
Kelly Dowuona and
Anoek Pruijmboom, but Saint Francis dropped the No. 1 match 6-3 and the No. 3 match 6-4.
Singles
Saint Francis took five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets.
Bente Vandeputte and Dowuona earned 6-1, 6-0 wins each in No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Pruijmboom took a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 4 doubles and
Valeria Vinces clinched the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 5 singles.
Marie Discini capped off the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles.
Men's: Saint Francis 4, St. Francis Brooklyn 3
Doubles
Saint Francis took the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. The Red Flash narrowly won both their matches 7-6 in No. 1 doubles by
Marc Fuste and
Fabio Varella and 7-5 in No. 2 doubles by
Adam Kush and
Gregory Troyan.
Singles
Saint Francis clinched its victory with a 3-3 split in singles, but won the first three matches to earn the win. Varella won 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles and Fuste won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. The Red Flash clinched their victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win by Kush in the No. 3 match. St. Francis won the final three singles matches, two that went to a decisive third set.

Men's tennis returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 10 against Bucknell, while women's tennis faces Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 11. Both teams will host Colgate on Sunday, Feb. 12.
