Water Polo Finishes Weekend At Bruno Classic

CAMBRIDGE, MA. – The Saint Francis Women's Water Polo team picked up their first win of the season after a slow start at the Bruno Classic the past two days. The Red Flash faced off against the likes of La Salle, Wagner, Pomona-Pitzer, and Santa Clara over the two-day span in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Freshman Caylah Olay led all Red Flash players with eight goals over the two-day span followed by junior Emese Szucs who finished with six goals during the four-game stretch.

STATS/NOTES
  • Senior Taylor Halbauer and Olay led the Red Flash with two goals a piece in the first contest of the day.
  • The only time the Red Flash had the lead was in the middle of the first quarter when they had a 2-1 advantage on the scoreboard.
  • Saint Francis also got help from Szucs who gave the Red Flash the original lead they had in the first half.
  • Novalee Roberto scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game at 3-3 in the first half of play.

STATS/NOTES
  • Halbauer continued her solid weekend by leading the team with two goals in this contest along with Addison Williams who also had two scores.
  • The Red Flash had a tough time getting going from the start as Wagner held a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
  • This was the most points scored by an opposing team since Long Beach State on February 29th, 2020. 
POMONA PITZER 14, SAINT FRANCIS 12

STATS/NOTES
  • The Red Flash held the momentum throughout most of this contest and had the lead up until the end of regulation.
  • Saint Francis had two leading scorers with Szucs and Olay both chipping in four goals a piece to pace the team.
  • Williams added two goals for the Red Flash while Halbauer tallied one score and Abigail Carter put up one goal in the overtime period.
  • Goalie Isabel Lumley had a great game in net racking up 22 saves in net to help keep the Red Flash within striking distance.
SAINT FRANCIS 10, SANTA CLARA 9
 
STATS/NOTES
  • Senior Abigail Carter had a game to remember as she notched five goals, and scored at least one in each quarter to lead the Red Flash.
  • This was a classic back and forth matchup as the Red Flash didn't have a sustained lead until the end of the third quarter when it was 8-7 in favor of Saint Francis.
  • Williams and Olay also chipped in offensive production for Saint Francis as they both had two goals.
  • In net, it was a complete team effort as Lumley had six saves but had to leave the game due to injury and sophomore Grace Raquel stepped in to help keep the lead. Raquel had some impressive saves and ended up finishing the game with five stops and helping get the first win of the season for Saint Francis.

UP NEXT
The Red Flash will stay on the road as they take the short trip up to Lewisburg, PA and face off against Michigan, Salem, La Salle, and the host school Bucknell. This will be the second week in a row that the Red Flash will take on a nationally ranked opponent.
