Softball Walks Off Game Three to Earn Series Sweep Over Fairleigh Dickinson

LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University softball earned its second conference series sweep with a 9-8 comeback walk-off victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
» Olivia Ulam went 2-for-5 with one run scored and the walk-off hit in the seventh inning.
» Grace Vesco (11-8) earned the win after she went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with eight walks and eight strikeouts. She was replaced to start the fifth inning and re-entered in that same inning.
» Jordan Pietrzykoski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI on a base-loaded walk to tie the game in the seventh.
» Rachel Marsden went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. On the mound she allowed six runs in her 0.2 innings pitched in the fifth.
» Seven different Red Flash players produced one RBI, while eight different players scored at least one run.
 
TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME
» Saint Francis scored two runs early on a Marsden single and Ashley Wruble RBI on a fielder's choice in the first inning. The Red Flash extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning when Marsden scored on a Fairleigh Dickinson error.
» In the fourth inning, Fairleigh Dickinson scored one run on an infield single and cut the lead to 3-1 before a six-run fifth inning.
» When Marsden replaced Vesco to start the fifth, the Knights scored on a one-run single, one-run double and grand slam that gave them a 7-3 lead.
» In the bottom half, Saint Francis responded with four runs and tied the game 7-7. Savannah Nash started the rally with a one-run single, followed by a Wruble run scored on an error. Madelyn Wilson singled and Brianna Sawyers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap the four-run inning.
» In the seventh inning, Fairleigh Dickinson took the lead 8-7 with a one-run single. Saint Francis responded in the bottom half with a Pietrzykoski bases-loaded walk that tied the game and a Ulam single that won the game 9-8.

FLASH NUGGETS
» The victory was Vesco's 52nd of her career, which puts her in a tie with Ketarah DeVries (2013-17) for the most wins in program history. She is inching closer to the strikeouts record with 542, which is 33 shy of Laura Caldwell's (2006-09) record of 575.
» The win was Saint Francis' fifth walk-off of the season and the third in a non-run-rule victory.
» Saint Francis is now 10-2 in conference play, which is two games ahead of Central Connecticut and LIU, who both lost on Saturday.
