SELECT GAME NOTES VS. FDU (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Monday's game between Saint Francis and FDU marks the 103rd meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1954-55 campaign.
• The series is all square at 51 games apiece, while the Red Flash holds a 31-18 advantage at DeGol Arena.
• Starting with the 2018-19 seasons, the two teams have alternated wins in the last nine meetings. During the 2019-20 and 2021-22 season the away team won the contests, while in 2018-19 and 2022-23 the home team held serve in the series.
• FDU won the last game in the series in the NEC Semifinals last season in the Garden State. The Knights went on to defeat Purdue in the NCAA Tournament to become the second No. 16 seed to upset a No. 1 seed.
• You could use the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon to in a way say that the Red Flash helped the Knights broil over Purdue. The defense that the Knights used against the nation's top player, Zach Edey, was also the one that they employed against Saint Francis in the NEC Semifinals so do the Knights pull the upset without the Flash?
• Speaking of playoffs and those of a certain age probably are picturing Jim Mora's voice and tirade in their head: "Playoffs? Don't talk about—playoffs?! You kidding me? Playoffs?! I just hope we can win a game! Another game!" from November 28, 2001 when he was the head coach of the Indianapolis NFL team. The Frankies continue their tour against the last three teams that they played in the NEC Tournament with FDU.
• When Saint Francis returned to the postseason in 2022-23, they traveled to Wagner in the NEC Quarterfinals. Last season, they hosted CCSU in the NEC Quarterfinals and then traveled to FDU for the NEC Semifinals.
• "Purple Rain" by Prince could be playing or is it the artist formerly known as Prince and going by a symbol? In any rate, Saint Francis is in a midst of a three game series against teams that are more known for its initials with CCSU, FDU and LIU coming to town.
• FDU, in fact, has changed its athletic branding and only wants to be known by just those three letters. Saint Francis is in a similar boat trying to have the PA distinction dropped from its name too now that we are the only Saint Francis in Division I.
• If you are a fan of the movie
Dumb and Dumber, and we still are, you know this sequence between Lloyd Christmas and Mary Swanson: "What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me ending up together?... Not good... You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?... I'd say more like one out of a million.... So, you're telling me there's a chance. YEAH!"
• Saint Francis started the NEC slate 0-3, but you're telling me that we have a chance, but now more like one out of a million because there have been teams that start with three losses in league play and win the NEC Tournament or advance to the NEC Championship Game.
• LIU also started the slate 0-3 and won the NEC Tournament to become the only team in the 42 years of the league to accomplish that feat in 2012-13, while three times (2002-03 [St. Francis Brooklyn], 2004-05 [Wagner], 2008-09 [Mount St. Mary's]) opened its campaign 0-3 and advanced to the title bout.
• In 2012-13 (Robert Morris) and 2020-21 (Wagner) both started 0-2 and won the NEC regular season, but they won their third league game to start 1-2.
• Just like the Motley Crue song, "Home, Sweet, Home," Saint Francis "is on its way" in league play when it has a winning home record in NEC games at home, sweet home.
• The Red Flash has posted a non-losing record in league play seven times under Krimmel and in all seven occasions the team had more wins than losses at home in the circuit schedule.
• During the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2022-23 seasons, the Frankies combined for a 75-49 record in league with a 44-18 record at DeGol Arena.
• Conversely, in the four seasons that the team did not have a winning league record under the 12th-year head coach, the team is 13-23 at home.
• Prior to Krimmel taking over as head coach, Saint Francis had 13 non-losing seasons and in each of those seasons the squad also had a winning record at home in league play.
• Four times (1984-85, 1988-89, 1998-99, 1999-00) the Red Flash had a winning home league record, but did not finish with a non-losing league season but 20 of the 24 times (83.3 percent) of the time the Frankies posted a winning mark in NEC play if he had a winning mark at home in the circuit.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Be the first NEC win of the year and the 98th league win of
head coach
Rob Krimmel's career
• Be the second-straight win at home against FDU
• Improve league record to 1-3 for fourth time under Krimmel (2012-13, 2013-14, 2020-21) and avoid a second 0-4 start (2021-22)
LAST TIME OUT
• Wagner defeated Saint Francis 71-56 on January 6 in Staten Island.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn paced the Red Flash with 14 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Fellow freshman
Bobby Rosenberger III added 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore
Gestin Liberis chipped in nine points in the loss, his second-highest point total in his career in league play.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS
• Despite going into the locker room with an advantage, Saint Francis falls 75-61 to CCSU on Saturday.
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. notched his second 20-point game and finished with 21 points to pace the Red Flash.
• Sophomore
Chris Moncrief matched his career high of nine points and added four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
• Saint Francis has been a good second-half team this season, but Saturday against CCSU saw the Red Flash shoot just 33.3 percent (9-for-27) in the final frame, its lowest percentage all season. In addition, the 25 second half points were the second lowest of the season and marked only the third time the team was held under 30 points in the final frame and the first time since the first two games of the season.
TRENDING UP
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. has been fire in his last two games at DeGol Arena. The freshman scored 22 points against Campbell on December 30 and then notched 21 points against CCSU on Saturday. In those two contests, Lopez shot 65.0 percent from the floor (13-for-20), 84.6 percent from behind the arc (11-for-13) and 100 percent from the free throw line (6-for-6). He has posted four-straight games in double figures at home and four of his five 10+ games at home this season. Lopez is averaging 17.0 points per game in his last four games at DeGol Arena.
• A freshman has scored 20 points 19 times under head coach
Rob Krimmel. Lopez's 22 points against Campbell is the fifth most and his 21 points against CCSU is the ninth most in the last 12 years.
• Lopez has made a 3-pointer in six-straight games and is shooting 58.0 percent (18-for-31) from downtown in that span. The freshman was 4-for-39 (10.2 percent) in his first 10 games.
• Saint Francis has had a player reach 15 points 15 times this season with 12 of those outputs coming at DeGol Arena including all four 20-point performances (two each by Lopez and sophomore
Cam Gregory). Freshman
Bobby Rosenberger III has two of the games on the road with 15+ (19 points at Penn State on November 14 and 16 points at Lehigh on November 29 and Gregory also has one game with 15+ with 17 points at Iona on December 10).
• Sophomore
Chris Moncrief matched career-high nine points for the third time in his career and the second time in a Red Flash uniform. The sophomore also had nine points against Indiana State in his final game at Evansville and nine points at San Francisco on November 9 to make the nine points against CCSU the most points he has scored at DeGol Arena. After scoring in six of the first seven games, the sophomore had only scored four points against Iona in his last seven games he played before Saturday's output.
• Gregory has been held to single digits for the second-straight game on Saturday. It was the first time this season Gregory has been held to single digits in back-to-back games. The sophomore is averaging 14.8 points per game in the next game after he has been held to single digits including posting 19 points against Pitt Greensburg on November 20 and a career-high 22 points against Niagara on November 25.
• Freshman
Aaron "Ace" Talbert also enjoys the confines of DeGol Arena, averaging 13.0 points per game at home. Talbert has posted at least eight points in all seven home games and has registered double figures in five of the seven games in Loretto, including three-straight contests. Talbert is shooting 50.7 percent (34-for-67) from the floor and 46.2 percent (12-for-26) from behind the arc at home. He is averaging 11.5 points per game in his last six tilts.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn has recorded at least five rebounds in each of his last eight games with five 10+ rebound games and also has posted double figures in points five times in that stretch. The freshman is averaging 10.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in that stretch, which also coincides with the start of the month of December.
• Wilborn also continues to be a block machine with 33 in his last 14 games, including 11 games with at least two blocks with eight in his last nine tilts for a total of 24 in that span. Wilborn has six contests with three rejections and a career-high five blocks against Campbell. Wilborn's 33 blocks as a freshman are second only to Josh Nebo's 56 in 2015-16 under Krimmel, while he is also sixth for most blocks under the head coach by any class.
• The start of the season is also tough with the Red Flash playing teams that finished Top-5 in the NEC preseason poll in the first four games of the league slate:
- January 4 - Sacred Heart (preseason NEC favorite)
- January 6 - Wagner (preseason NEC No. 5)
- January 13 - CCSU (preseason NEC No. 2)
- January 15 - FDU (preseason NEC No. 3)
The fifth game is against LIU, the preseason No. 7 team, but the Sharks started NEC play with two wins before losing to Sacred Heart.
