SELECT GAME NOTES VS. MERRIMACK (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Saint Francis is coming off a 75-71 win against Sacred Heart on Thursday for its 11th-straight victory against the Pioneers at DeGol Arena.
• Merrimack comes into town winners of all three games played in Loretto and six of the seven in the series dating back to the 2019-20 season.
• The last two tilts at DeGol Arena have been decided by a combined four points after a Warriors 65-64 overtime decision in the 2021-22 meeting and a 78-75 win last season.
• Saint Francis' lone win in the series was a 62-46 victory in Massachusetts in 2021-22. In that game, the Red Flash fell behind 11-1 in the first four minutes of the game.
• The win versus Sacred Heart had two monumental moments. For the first time in program history Saint Francis started five freshman together. It is also believed to be the first time an NCAA Division I team started five freshmen together this year.
• Prior to the game on Thursday, the Frankies started four freshmen together for the previous 10 games. Kentucky and Holy Cross are the only other teams in the nation to have started four newcomers in the same game.
• Coppin State has started six different freshmen this season, but three starting together has been the Eagles' max. Kentucky has called five different freshman's name this season, but only four at a time.
• Coming into the season, four freshmen in the starting lineup was a program record. That feat was last accomplished against Mount St. Mary's on February 9, 2002.
• The win was also head coach
Rob Krimmel's 99th NEC regular season win to break the tie with former LIU head coach/current UMBC head coach Jim Ferry.
• With a win, Krimmel would become the 12th head coach in league history to reach 100 league regular season wins, joining Tom Green (FDU, 263), Howie Dickenman (CCSU, 187), Ron Ganulin (St. Francis Brooklyn 129), Dave Calloway (Monmouth, 127), Dave Magarity (Saint Francis/Marist, 117), Jim Phelan (Mount St. Mary's, 116), Glenn Braica (St. Francis Brooklyn, 116), Andrew Toole (Robert Morris, 115), Bashir Mason (Wagner, 111), Wayne Szoke (Monmouth, 109) and Dave Bike (Sacred Heart, 105).
• The 12th-year head coach looks to reach another win milestone in the state of Pennsylvania. He registered his first win as a head coach against CCSU on January 3, 2013 and his 50th win as a head coach against Bryant on January 19, 2017 with both of those wins coming at DeGol Arena. Krimmel notched his 100th and 150th wins on the road, but never left the Keystone State. He registered his 100th win at Saint Joseph's on November 30, 2019 and his 150th victory at Lehigh on November 29, 2023. Only his 50th NEC was won out of state at St. Francis Brooklyn on February 10, 2018.
• Along with his 150th win this season, Krimmel coached his 350th game as a head coach at Wagner on January 6. The Red Flash alumni now has been on the sideline for over 800 games as player, assistant coach and head coach.
• In team's first trip to Le Moyne since Maurice Stokes' freshman year (1950-51), Krimmel coached his 200th NEC regular season contest. He is the 10th man to reach that feat with many of the coaches now in his company ones that he is trying to join with 100 NEC regular season wins: Green (452, 1983-09), Dickenman (344, 1997-16), Bike (258, 1999-13), Ganulin (254, 1991-05), Calloway (250, 1998-11), Phelan, 250, 116-134), Braica (230, 2010-23), Paul Lizzo (LIU, 225, 1982-95) and Magarity (214, 1982-83, 1987-97).
• Krimmel became the second former Red Flash player to have coached 200 games in the NEC that also coach in Loretto. Magarity played for the Frankies from 1974-78 and then was an assistant coach in Loretto from 1974-78 before serving as the head coach from 1978-83. The 1982-83 season was the first season of the ECAC Metro which would later become the NEC and then he was head coach at Marist from 1986-2004 with the first 10 years with the Red Foxes the team was a member of the NEC.
• Despite the single game at Le Moyne, the Frankies are in the midst of five of six games at home. It is the fourth time under Krimmel the Red Flash will play five of six at home in league play. The team also turned the trick in 2013-14, 2019-20 and 2021-22.
• Saint Francis coaching staff will join the Coaches Vs. Cancer Sneakers and Suits Week initiative and will don sneakers along with their usual suits for the games against Sacred Heart and Merrimack to raise awareness in the fight to end cancer. The Red Flash coaching staff are one of the few in the nation that still wears suits for every game.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
• Saturday's game against Merrimack, local school-age students are invited to attend the ESPN+ game for free, and adults will receive a ticket at the $5 group rate. In addition, the team will be available to sign autographs after the game against Merrimack.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Be the 100th league win of head coach Rob Krimmel's career
• Be the first win against Merrimack at DeGol Arena
• Give the team back-to-back wins for the third time this year
• Earn the team's third-straight win at home for the first time this season.
LAST TIME OUT
• Sophomore
Miles Webb registered a career-high 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks to lead Saint Francis past Sacred Heart 75-71 on Thursday.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn registered 13 points and seven rebounds, while fellow freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. had 14 points.
• The Red Flash dished out 20 assists in the game for the second time this season and improved to 10-2 under head coach
Rob Krimmel when the team reaches 20 helpers. The squad also shot a season-high 63.0 percent in the second half.
ABOUT THE WARRIORS
• Merrimack enters the game 11-10 overall and 5-2 in NEC play after downing Wagner 60-44 on Thursday.
• Sophomore
Jordan Derdack paced the Warriors with 19 points and seven rebounds, while freshman
Adam "Budd" Clark added 16 points.
• Derdack leads the NEC with 17.1 points and a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Junior
Devon Savage is second on the team with 11.0 points per game, while Clark is also averaging double figures with 10.4 points per game.
TRENDING UP
• Sophomore
Miles Webb notched his fourth 10+ point game of the season on Thursday. The last time he reached double figures was when he returned near his hometown of Arlington, Va., and posted 10 points at American on December 2. Since that date against the Eagles, the sophomore had 21 points in the next 10 games and went 8-for-20 from the floor in that stretch before his outburst against Sacred Heart.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn has registered double figures in six of the seven NEC games this season. The freshman is averaging 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in his last three tilts and sits at 12.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in league games. It is the first time in his career that he has scored 10+ points in four-straight contests. Wilborn is also shooting 23-for-32 from the floor in his last four contests.
• Wilborn has grabbed seven rebounds 11 times this season. The freshman has registered less than five boards in only five of the 20 games he has played with four of those games coming in his first eight collegiate contests.
• According to @nechoopsron, Wilborn, who is second in the NEC in blocks (1.75), second in field goal percentage (58.6) and fourth in rebounding (7.1), is looking to become the first freshman since CCSU's Kyle Vinales (scoring, free throws, 3-pointers made) to finish in the Top-5 in the NEC in three categories in 2011-12. Prior to that, you'd have to go all the way back to the 1999-00 season when future NEC Player of the Year Corsley Edwards ended his freshman campaign rated in the Top-5 in rebounding, field goal percentage blocks.
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. posted his seventh double figures performance this season and his fifth at home with all of those performances coming in his last seven home games. Lopez is averaging 13.5 points per game in those seven tilts. The freshman also notched 10+ points for the first time in the starting lineup against Sacred Heart.
• Freshman
Aaron "Ace" Talbert dished out seven assists against the Pioneers. The freshman has the top two assists marks this season after handing out a career-high nine helpers against Campbell on December 29 when he narrowly missed his first career double-double.
• Freshman
Bobby Rosenberger III has also picked up his assists with six on Thursday and must really take it to heart since that mark bests his previous career high of five helpers in the meeting against the Pioneers in Fairfield.
IT'S MY (BIRTHDAY) PARTY, AND WE WILL WIN IF WE WANT TO (WE DON'T WANT JUDY TO HAVE A TURN TO WIN)
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn's birthday was on January 19 and he registered a career-high 19 points and was featured as a top play on Sports Center in a 72-66 win.
• Thursday was team manager's
Matt Hall's birthday and the Red Flash defeated Sacred Heart.
