SELECT GAME NOTES VS. SACRED HEART (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Thursday's Northeast Conference opener between Saint Francis and Sacred Heart marks the 43rd meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1999-00 season.
• The Red Flash lead the series 24-18, but the Pioneers hold a 12-9 edge at the William H. Pitt Center including wins in the last three tilts in Fairfield.
• The game pits the two longest tenured head coaches in the league against one another. Saint Francis head coach
Rob Krimmel became the dean of the NEC when St. Francis Brooklyn ceased athletic competitions after last season, while Sacred Heart head coach
Anthony Latina took over the helm at Sacred Heart one year after Krimmel.
• Saint Francis heads into its 43rd Northeast Conference opener 20-22 in the first game of the year.
• It will be the 22nd time the team will open the league slate on the road and the first since 2019-20.
• The Frankies are 15-6 at home in the first game of the year and the reverse record (6-15) on the road in the inaugural league tilt.
• The Red Flash is 5-6 in the NEC opener under Krimmel but are 0-4 away from DeGol Arena.
• Saint Francis is looking for its first road league opening win since defeating Robert Morris 75-68 on December 7, 2007, and end a five-game losing streak in road circuit openers.
• It will be the second time the Red Flash and the Pioneers will open NEC slate against each other and the first time since 2005-06 when the two teams tangled in Loretto with Sacred Heart earning a 76-74 win.
• It will be the third time Saint Francis will open the league season in Connecticut after defeating CCSU in 1997-98 and then the squad fell to the Blue Devils 10 years later in New Britain.
• It is also the second-straight year the team will open the league slate against a team from the Nutmeg State after defeating CCSU last season at home.
• Saint Francis opened the season a team-high six times against Robert Morris when they were a part of the league, while CCSU and Wagner are the second-most played teams in NEC openers with five games apiece.
• Saint Francis will play the preseason favorite in the NEC opener for the third time in program history and the second time on the road.
• The Red Flash lost at FDU in 2016-17 and to Wagner at DeGol Arena in 2021-22 when both teams were the preseason favorite.
• Sacred Heart enters the game as the preseason favorite for the second time in program history and first since the 2007-08 campaign. The Pioneers won on the road in that NEC inaugural contest.
• The league's preseason favorite is 9-1 at home and 6-10 on the road in the first conference game of the year dating back to the 1997-98 season.
• It is the first time the preseason favorite will start the year at home since the Frankies were at DeGol Arena in 2018-19.
• The only time the preseason favorite lost at home in the opener was Monmouth in 2006-07.
• The preseason favorite has gone on to win the NEC Tournament title five times (1995-96, 1998-99, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2022-23), while six times the preseason favorite has advanced to the title game (1992-93, 1994-95, 1996-97, 1997-98, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2014-15, 2018-19, 2021-22).
• The team that wins the NEC Tournament title is 11-3 at home and 7-5 on the road in the first contest in the circuit on the year.
• The Loretto team has also started the league slate against the team that would go on to win the NEC Tournament title twice: 1989-90 (Robert Morris) and 2020-21 (Mount St. Mary's).
• The Frankies ended the non-conference slate with a 78-76 win against Campbell on December 30 to end the non-conference slate with a win for the first time since the 2019-20 season when the Red Flash defeated another CAA team William & Mary 78-72.
• The Red Flash finished the non-conference slate with five wins for the fourth time under Krimmel, joining the 2014-15 (6-4), 2017-18 (5-5) and 2018-19 (7-3) teams.
• Saint Francis heads to Wagner on Saturday before returning to DeGol Arena to start a three-game homestand against CCSU (January 13), FDU (January 15) and LIU (January 19).
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Win the NEC opener for the second-straight season and the sixth time under head coach
Rob Krimmel
• Be the first road win in the NEC opener under Krimmel and the first since defeating Robert Morris 75-68 on December 7, 2007
• Be the second win in the state of Connecticut in the NEC opener for the Red Flash and the first since downing CCSU in 1997-98
• Become the second team to defeat the NEC preseason favorite on the road and the first since 2006-07
• End a three-game losing streak at the William H. Pitt Center
• Earn the team its third two-game winning streak this season
• Give the Red Flash three wins on the road to match last year's total
LAST TIME OUT
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. scored a career-high 22 points, including eight of the final 11 points to power Saint Francis past Campbell 78-76 on December 30.
• Lopez finished the game 6-for-7 from behind the arc, including making his last six shots from downtown. The six 3-balls were the most by a player since playing at CCSU on February 24, 2022.
• Sophomore
Cam Gregory added 18 points, while freshmen
Aaron "Ace" Talbert (12 points, nine assists) and
Bobby Rosenberger III (10 points) also found double figures in the game.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and three assists.
• Talbert's nine assists are the most since Ramiir Dixon-Conover registered 10 helpers against Bryant on January 14, 2021.
• Wilborn's five blocks were the most since Mark Flagg had five rejections against Bryant on February 9, 2019.
ABOUT THE PIONEERS
• Sacred Heart, the NEC preseason favorite, comes into the league opener 6-9 after defeating Mercy 92-63 on December 30.
• Redshirt junior
Aidan Carpenter paced the Pioneers in the win with 19 points, while graduate student
Alex Sobel (16 points, 17 rebounds), Nico Galette (16 points), senior
Kyle McGee (11 points) and graduate student
Brendan McGuire (11 points) also found double figures.
• Galette leads the team with 14.2 points per game. Sobel powers the team in rebounding (7.6 rpg.) and ranks second in scoring (11.5 ppg.) while junior
Tanner Thomas is also averaging double figures in scoring (10.8 ppg.).
TRENDING UP
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. hopes the success he had in the month of December carries over into the new year. The freshman averaged 13.0 points per game and connected on 42.6 percent (20-for-47) of his shots from the floor and 41.4 percent (12-for-29) from behind the arc. In addition he has registered double figures in four of his five games in the month. He has posted double figures in three-straight games and is averaging 15.7 points per game in that stretch.
• Conversely, Lopez started his first collegiate month of basketball averaging 3.5 points per game and shooting 20.5 percent (9-for-44) from the floor and 7.1 percent (2-for-28) from downtown. The freshman had a then career-best eight points twice in the month of November.
•
Sophomore
Cam Gregory continues to career-best streak of five-straight games in double figures in points. What might be more impressive might be that he has posted at least 16 points in his last four tilts. That is a feat that he only did once as a freshman and two times before this current streak. He is averaging 17.0 points per game in his last five games and 17.8 points per game in his last four tilts.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn registered 10 rebounds in a game for the fourth time this season against Campbell, but it was also the first time it did not accompany double figures in points. Wilborn has turned away at least one shot in nine of the 13 games this season, including six-straight games and eight of his last 10. He has registered multi-block games seven times, including three or more seven times this season. After averaging 6.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game with nine blocks in the eight games in November, the freshman is averaging 10.0 points and 9.4 rebounds per game with 15 blocks in the five games he played in December.
• Freshman
Aaron "Ace" Talbert has been a consistent double-figure scorer since the team finished up against the Power 6 teams and the West Coast trip. He has scored 10+ points in six of his last eight games and also had a nine-point game to his credit. The freshman is averaging 12.5 points per game in his last eight games. In addition, Talbert has posted at least five assists three times in his last four games and multiple assist contests six times in his last seven tilts.
• Freshman
Bobby Rosenberger III has scored double figures in consecutive games for the second time in his career and now has five double-figure games to his credit.
