Women’s Basketball Set to Open 2024-25 Season at Home Against NJIT

LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University women's basketball is scheduled to open their 2024-25 season on Monday Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. It is the home opener for the Red Flash
 
Saint Francis Quick Hits
The Red Flash enter the season with 10 returning players led by Yanessa Boyd's 7.1 points per game and Kameryn Dorsey's 3.4 assists per game. Dorsey finished fourth in the Northeast Conference and tied 14th in Division I freshmen last season in assists. Marissa Shelton returns as the leading deep threat after she converted 30 three-pointers last season. She converted 17 of her three-pointers in the final nine games of the season. Marina Artero (5.5) and Julianna Gibson (4.9) return the top per game rebounding totals from last year's team. Destini Ward, who averaged 11.4 points in 22 games last season is set to miss the 2024-25 season due to injury.
 
Scouting NJIT
The Highlanders held a 12-18 overall and 4-12 America East record last season and fell 57-42 to UAlbany in the America East Quarterfinals. The program went 5-1 over NEC opponents last season with the only loss to eventual NEC Champion Sacred Heart. NJIT returns its leading scorer from last season, Alejandra Zuniga, after she averaged 14.7 points per game. Trinity Williams led the program with 6.4 rebounds per game and finished second with 9.0 points per game. The Highlanders were selected to finish eighth out of nine programs in the America East Preseason Poll.
 
All-Time vs. NJIT
Saint Francis and NJIT met for the first time in program history last season in a 68-41 victory for the Highlanders. Boyd finished with a team-high 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. It marked her fifth collegiate double-digit scoring effort in her first 10 games. NJIT's Zuniga had a game-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
 
Around the NEC
Sacred Heart, the reigning NEC Champion, departed the conference for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference alongside Merrimack. Chicago State, who was previously a Division I Independent, and Mercyhurst, who was in Division II last season, replaced the programs. Both incoming programs were selected tied for last in the NEC Preseason Poll, while FDU was selected as the unanimous favorite to win the conference.

Saint Francis is on the road for the first time this season on Saturday, Nev. 9 for a 2 p.m. tip-off at Lafayette.
