Women's Basketball Falls To Duquesne On The Road

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Saint Francis Women's Basketball dropped their Sunday afternoon contest at Duquesne, 85-71.

>> Yanessa Boyd led the Red Flash in scoring with a career-high 20 points. The sophomore went 8-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from three. She is the first player to record 20 points in a game this season, and has four double-digit scoring performances overall.

>> Airah Lavy was the team's second leading scorer with 15 points, including her second game of the season with five three pointers. The freshman posted five at Robert Morris on Nov. 20. She has posted double-digit points in three of the last five games.

>> Julianna Gibson grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points (4-for-5 from the field) and three assists.

TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME

The two teams went back-and-forth to start the game, with the score tied at 8 at the 7:34 mark. The Dukes proceeded to go on a 11-0 run to the 2:49 mark, and would carry the momentum to holding a 24-16 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Duquesne continued to pull away with a 26-13 second quarter to extend their lead to 50-29 at halftime.

Saint Francis outscored the Dukes in the third quarter, 25-20, to cut their deficit to 70-54 at the end of the third quarter. The Red Flash continued their comeback attempt by cutting the lead to 75-62 at the 5:39 mark of the fourth. Duquesne would not let the game get any closer, going on a 10-3 run to help pull away with the win.

FLASH MOMENTS

Boyd scored 12 of the Red Flash's 16 points, including the first eight, in the first quarter. She went 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from the three point line.

Lavy and Natalie Johnson combined for 11 points in the second quarter. Lavy hit back-to-back three pointers at the 2:14 and 1:37 marks to keep the Dukes from extending their lead further.

In their 25-point third quarter, the team recorded nine assists on nine field goals. Boyd and Lavy contributed a combined 17 to help chip into the deficit.

Saint Francis outpaced Duquesne in the fourth quarter, 17-15. Marissa Shelton hit two threes as a part of her seven points in the final 10 minutes.

FLASH NUGGETS

The Red Flash finished with season bests in points (71), field goals made (27), and assists (21). Ineivi Plata recorded a career-high nine assists while Marina Artero tied hers with six. Artero first collected six on Nov. 9 at Lafayette.

Saint Francis posted a season-best 13 three pointers. It is the most threes made by a Red Flash team since hitting 14 versus Bryant in the Northeast Conference Quarterfinals on March 11, 2019.  

Boyd tallied a career-high two blocks as a part of the team's season-best five blocks. Plata registered her first collegiate block.

Jade Campbell and Plata each posted five rebounds. Campbell also pitched in a season-best six points.

Johnson was the third player with double-digit points with 10, including two triples. It is the fourth game with 10 or more points this season for the junior.
