Bowling Carries Momentum into Second Day, Goes 3-2 to Finish Qualifying Round

The Saint Francis University bowling team tapped into the momentum holdover from their perfect Friday to bowl to a 3-2 record on the second day of competition at the 6th Annual Mount Shootout at the Clearview Lanes in Mount Joy, Pa.

The Red Flash (45-44, 9-5 NEC) secured one of the four paths to a championship on Sunday, moving into fourth place after the two-day qualifying rounds. Highlights of the day came in the match four victory over No. 4 North Carolina A&T State and the win over rival Kutztown in the final match of Saturday to secure a winning record for the second straight day.

HOW IT WENT DOWN
The Frankies burst right out of the gate on Saturday morning, bowling one of the highest team scores of the season against Coppin State to secure their sixth straight victory of the tournament. Senior Samantha Timm rolled a 268 to open the tournament in second place individually, while sophomore Mackenzie Keane stayed in the top 10 with a 247 against the Eagles.

The Flash had their successful run halted in the second match, as Lincoln Memorial shot one of the highest pin totals of the tournament in an 1130-963 blowout of Saint Francis. While the team tried to regain momentum in match three against Alvernia, a comeback attempt fell just short as the Red Flash fell to 1-2 on the day.

Saint Francis would have to gain some traction mid-match to defeat No. 4 North Carolina A&T State, the top-ranked team in the tournament. While the team got a slow start against the Aggies, senior Emma Meade shot a 276 game that included nine straight strikes to create quite the crucial moments for both teams in the tenth and final frame. With Meade, Keane and Timm hitting on clutch shots in the final frame and the Aggies missing their pivotal shots, the Flash managed a 25-pin victory for yet another upset of a team ranked in the top 15.

The team finished the day off against Kutztown, a team they hadn't faced much since the Golden Bears left the Northeast Conference and made a coaching change. While it was a much lower scoring game, the early accuracy of first-year leadoff bowler Hayden Bennett proved crucial in the 60-pin win.

WHERE WE STAND THROUGH TWO DAYS
The Red Flash have an 8-2 record, tied with Lincoln Memorial for the second-best record in the tournament. Of note, the team with the best record - No. 13 Mount St. Mary's - received their only loss from the Red Flash on Friday.

However, with the tournament seeded by total overall pinfall, the Red Flash found themselves in fourth place at the end of the two-day qualifying round. They are one of four teams guaranteed a path to the tournament championship round, along with No. 4 North Carolina A&T, No. 13 Mount St. Mary's and No. 25 Niagara. The Flash have fared well as of late against the three teams, as they picked up wins over the two top-15 teams this weekend while they currently hold a winning record on the season over No. 25 Niagara.

The Flash tallied a total pinfall of 10,118, including a 5,079 baker pinfall from Friday's competition and a 5,039 traditional pinfall from Saturday's five matches. The team finished the two-day stretch with a 202.4 average pinfall, enough for an 8-2 record through 10 matches.

As far as individual standings go, both Timm and Keane sit in the top 20 in the field of 89 qualified bowlers, with the senior averaging 212.8 for a 13th place finish and the sophomore shooting an average of 204.8 to claim 19th place. In addition, Meade was the second-best bowler to score in four games, as the senior averaged 206.75 in the final four matches of the day.
