SELECT GAME NOTES VS. LIU (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Saturday's game between Saint Francis and LIU marks the 88th meeting in the all-time series, dating back to the 1963-64 season.
• The Sharks hold a 44-43 edge in the matchup, but the Red Flash have won the last three tilts in the series.
• It is the fourth time in the series the Frankies have won three consecutive tilts against the Sharks (1986-89 Flash won four straight vs. LIU; 1989-92 Flash won five consecutive vs. LIU; 1992-96 Flash won eight in a row vs. LIU)
• LIU leads the series 27-12 in Brooklyn with a 13-4 record at the Wellness Center and a 14-8 record at the old historic Paramount Theatre. Saint Francis head coach
Rob Krimmel was a huge fan of the old home of LIU.
• The Frankies are looking to win back-to-back games against the Sharks in Brooklyn for the third time in team history. The team also won back-to-back games in Brooklyn 1987-88, 1994-95 and 2016-17.
• Saint Francis is coming off a classic Assistant Coach
Eric Taylor "one-point blowout" 63-62 loss at CCSU on Thursday. The Red Flash is 9-6 in one-point games under Krimmel in his 12 seasons as a head coach, 1-1 this season and 3-2 on the road.
• Prior to Thursday's one-point loss, the last time the squad lost by one point on the road was a 71-70 overtime decision at Robert Morris on February 28, 2015.
• The other road "one-point blowouts" under Krimmel were a 55-54 win at Bryant in the NEC Quarterfinals in 2013-14, the Keith Braxton improbably 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 71-70 win at Wagner in NEC Semifinals in 2016-17 and a 62-61 win against Lehigh on November 29 for Krimmel's 150th career win.
• Saint Francis is 3-2 this season in games decided by three points or less. The squad was 3-1 in non-conference play, but the loss against the Blue Devils marked the first conference game decided by three points or less in 2023-24.
• Krimmel is one win away from his 100th NEC regular season win. The 12th-year head coach recorded his first win as a head coach against the Blue Devils with a 67-60 win at DeGol Arena on January 3, 2013.
• With a win, Krimmel would become the 12th head coach in league history to reach 100 league regular season wins, joining Tom Green (FDU, 263), Howie Dickenman (CCSU, 187), Ron Ganulin (St. Francis Brooklyn 129), Dave Calloway (Monmouth, 127), Dave Magarity (Saint Francis/Marist, 117), Jim Phelan (Mount St. Mary's, 116), Glenn Braica (St. Francis Brooklyn, 116), Andrew Toole (Robert Morris, 115), Bashir Mason (Wagner, 111), Wayne Szoke (Monmouth, 109) and Dave Bike (Sacred Heart, 105).
• If the Red Flash win a game this weekend, it would be only the second milestone win for Krimmel out of the state of Pennsylvania, joining his 50th NEC win at St. Francis Brooklyn on February 10, 2018.
• All of his other milestone wins came in the Keystone State. Along with his first win against the Blue Devils, his 50th win was against Bryant on January 19, 2017, at DeGol Arena. His 100th and 150th did not happen at home but did occur in the state. He earned his 100th win at Saint Joseph's on November 30, 2019, and his 150th win at Lehigh on November 29, 2023.
• The next two games in which he could reach the mark have connections to earlier milestones. With a win against LIU on Saturday, his 50th and 100th NEC win would have occurred in Brooklyn. The team returns home to host Stonehill on February 10, the sixth anniversary of his 50th NEC win to the day, which is almost what happened for Krimmel's 150th career win early this year after he won it one day before the fourth anniversary of his 100th win.
• Krimmel won his 150th game on his second attempt at the milestone after falling to Niagara 69-61 four days before Lehigh. The game at LIU will be Krimmel's third attempt at the milestone.
• For some, the last three games have rekindled memories of Michigan's Fab Five after the Frankies started five freshman.
• Before the game against Sacred Heart on January 25, the Frankies started four freshman together for 10-consecutive games. Kentucky and Holy Cross are the other teams in the nation to start four newcomers in the same game.
• Coppin State has started six different freshman this season, but three starting together has been the Eagles' max. Kentucky has called five freshman's names this season, but only four at a time.
• Coming into the season, four freshmen in the starting lineup was a program record. The last time the feat happened was against Mount St. Mary's on February 9, 2002.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Be the 100th league win of head coach Rob Krimmel's career
• Be the second-straight win at LIU, a trick the team would turn for the third time with a victory
• Be the team's first road win in NEC play and first this season since defeating American on December 2 in the nation's capital
• Match last season's win total of three wins on the road
LAST TIME OUT
• Saint Francis roared back with a 22-13 run to end the game, but CCSU made a free throw with 2:22 left to take the lead for good and set up a wild final several minutes of the game. The Blue Devils defeated the Red Flash, 63-62.
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. paced the team by matching his career high of 22 points. Sophomore
Wisler Sanon II added a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds. Sanon had 10 of his 13 points in the final seven minutes of the game.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn grew up in nearby Middletown, Conn., and he finished with nine points.
LAST TIME WE MET
• Freshmen
Bobby Rosenberger III and
Eli Wilborn combined for 40 points and 16 rebounds to power Saint Francis past LIU 72-66 on January 19.
• Rosenberger finished with a career-high 21 points and nine rebounds, while Wilborn had a career-high 19 points for the first time this season. Wilborn also had the No. 4 play on ESPN Sports Center on his birthday.
•
Tana Kopa paced the Sharks with 20 points, while
Tai Strickland (17 points) and
RJ Greene (10 points) also posted double figures on the night.
ABOUT THE SHARKS
• LIU comes into the contest 4-16 overall and 3-5 in NEC play after falling to FDU 82-75 on Thursday.
• Graduate student
Tai Strickland paced the Sharks with 21 points, while freshman
Nikola Djapa (19 points) and junior
Tana Kopa (18 points) also found double figures against the Knights.
• Strickland leads the team with 15.5 points per game, while freshman
Eric Acker (12.7 ppg.) and Kopa (12.2 ppg.) are also averaging double figures in points. Sophomore
RJ Greene leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game.
TRENDING UP
• Freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr. matched his career high of 22 points in the game on Thursday. The freshman also had 22 points against Campbell on December 30, and had 21 points in the first meeting against the Blue Devils on January 13. After averaging 5.0 points per game in his first four starts of the season, the freshman is averaging 14.3 points per game since returning to the starting lineup for the last three games.
• Lopez also has a weird statistic when it comes to rebounds. The freshman has grabbed one rebound in his last seven games. After an offensive rebound in his first two tilts in this stretch, Lopez has had one defensive rebound in his last five contests.
• Sophomore
Wisler Sanon II registered his first 10+ point game of the season and his first double-figure performance against a Division I team. The sophomore had a then career-high 11 points against Saint Vincent on December 8. Sanon, who narrowly missed double figures in points in the season opener at UCLA on November 6, also had a career-high seven rebounds against the Blue Devils to mark the second time this season he has hauled in at least five caroms.
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn had his string of five-straight games in double figures end against CCSU on Thursday. The freshman has posted double figures in eight of the nine NEC games. He is avearging 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the last six games.
• According to @nechoopsron, Wilborn, who is second in the NEC in blocks (1.73), third in field goal percentage (55.1) and fourth in rebounding (7.3), is looking to become the first freshman since CCSU's Kyle Vinales (scoring, free throws, 3-pointers made) to finish in the Top-5 in the NEC in three categories in 2011-12. Prior to that, you'd have to go all the way back to the 1999-00 season when future NEC Player of the Year Corsley Edwards ended his freshman campaign rated in the Top-5 in rebounding, field goal percentage blocks.
• Freshman
Aaron "Ace" Talbert has registered a career-high five rebounds in back-to-back games. While the freshman had a string of seven 10+ point games in eight contests earlier this season, the freshman is looking for his first double-figure point game since 14 points at Sacred Heart on January 4.
• Freshman
Aidan Harris has grabbed at least five rebounds in four-straight games, including seven boards in his last two games. In his last 10 games, Harris has three seven-rebound games and a pair each of five rebound and eight rebound contests. The freshman is averaging 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in his last four games.
