Women’s Basketball Faces Quick Turnaround to Host LIU on Saturday

LORETTO, Pa. –
Saint Francis University women's basketball hosts LIU on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. before heading into a 12-day break between games.
 
Saint Francis Quick Hits
Marissa Shelton (14) and Harris Robinson (12) are both coming off career-high scoring efforts against Central Connecticut. Robinson ranks fourth on the team with 3.7 rebounds per game and she has eight games with at least five rebounds this season. Kendall Carruthers leads Saint Francis with 15.3 points per game in conference and 12.8 overall. Her conference total is fourth in the Northeast Conference, while her overall total is fifth. She has nine games with at least 15 points this season. Kameryn Dorsey is off a career-high eight assists against Central Connecticut and she ranks tied for fourth in the NEC with 3.4 per game during conference play.
 
Last Time Out
Saint Francis fell at home to Central Connecticut 64-58. The Blue Devils held the largest lead of the first quarter, four points, before the frame ended in a tie at 19. In the second, both teams stayed within three points the entire quarter and Central Connecticut entered the half with a 30-29 lead. Out of the half the Blue Devils opened a 40-35 lead midway through the third before Saint Francis followed with an 11-2 run and led 46-42 with 3:03 remaining. Central Connecticut buried two field goals and the game was tied at 46 through three quarters. The Blue Devils opened the fourth quarter on a 12-5 run and led 58-51 with 2:20 remaining. Saint Francis was twice able to pull within four points before Central Connecticut clinched its six-point win.  
 
Scouting LIU
The Sharks hold a 5-15 overall and 3-5 conference record heading into Saturday's game. LIU is currently on a three-game losing streak with losses to the NEC's top-three teams in the standings – Sacred Heart, Le Moyne and FDU. Ashley Austin ranks third in the NEC with 14.7 points per game overall and has 15.0 per game in five conference appearances. She is also third in the conference with 3.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Austin missed the first meeting between Saint Francis and LIU but has returned to the lineup. Mariah Elohim is top-10 in the NEC with 13.3 points per game in conference play. Amaya Dowdy leads the program with 5.1 rebounds and she adds 7.4 points per game. Emaia O'Brien is second on the team with a conference fourth-best 3.4 assists per game.
 
All-Time vs. LIU
Saint Francis holds a 54-22 all-time advantage over LIU with a dominant 30-7 record at home. LIU won this season's meeting 72-64 on Jan. 19. Carruthers scored a career-high 30 points and went 8-of-9 from three-point territory in the loss. It still remains the highest scoring output by a Red Flash player since Jess Kovatch's 38 points on March 11, 2019 at Bryant. In the game she became just one of five players in program history with at least eight converted three-pointers. Overall in the series, Saint Francis has won five of the last seven meetings. The series began with a 96-57 Saint Francis victory in 1986.
 
Around the NEC
Sacred Hear (7-1) defeated Stonehill (3-5) 80-53 and Le Moyne (7-1) defeated Wagner (2-5) 56-45 to remain tied atop the NEC standings. FDU (5-3) remained third in the conference with a 59-56 win over LIU (3-5). Central Connecticut (3-5) took a 64-58 win over Saint Francis (2-7). Merrimack visits Central Connecticut, Sacred Heart visits Le Moyne, Stonehill visits Wagner and LIU visits Saint Francis on Saturday.

After its 12-day break, Saint Francis returns to action at home on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. for its Think Pink game.
