SELECT GAME NOTES VS. STONEHILL (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• If Cliff Murdoch was announcing the game on Saturday between Saint Francis and Stonehill, one might think it was for the "whole ball of wax, the whole kit and caboodle, the whole enchilada..." but it is just another chance for the Red Flash to clinch a spot in the NEC Tournament.
• A win, and the Frankies are in. A loss and the Frankies will have to wait until March 2 to clinch, and the team can clinch or even be eliminated before it takes the floor against Le Moyne in the regular season finale.
• Saint Francis' magic number is two. The Red Flash have the bye on Thursday. Stonehill plays at Sacred Heart on Thursday, and at CCSU on Saturday at 1 p.m., Saint Francis plays Le Moyne at 4 p.m. so that Stonehill will wrap up the regular season before the Red Flash tip again.
• If Stonehill wins on Saturday and then drops its final two games, Saint Francis clinches without stepping back on the court.
• If Stonehill wins out, they would clinch the tournament berth because even if Saint Francis defeats Le Moyne, the Skyhawks would hold the tiebreaker thanks to its win against CCSU on March 2.
• If Stonehill wins Saturday and defeats Sacred Heart, Saint Francis could clinch a spot with a win against Le Moyne. The same is true if the Skyhawks' only win is against CCSU.
• However, with two Stonehill wins, one coming on Saturday, and two Saint Francis losses, the tiebreaker would become either CCSU or LIU and Wagner. A Stonehill win against CCSU would hold the cards, and a Skyhawks win against Sacred Heart would come down to if Wagner or LIU finishes higher in the standings. Both Saint Francis and Stonehill would own wins against Sacred Heart, so the next-best win for the Red Flash is LIU, and the next-best win for Stonehill is Wagner. Wagner is currently 6-8, and LIU is 6-7. One more caveat is that if Wagner and LIU finish in a tie, it comes down to the net rankings.
• So while it is not "for all the marbles" like in Rookie of the Year if the Red Flash listens to Al Davis and "just win, baby," it makes it pretty easy.
• It sounds easier said than done because statistics are not on Saint Francis' side. Stonehill is coming off a Thursday bye, and the team with the first game off of the week is 7-0 in its next game. To combat that, the Red Flash are 0-6 in the second game of the week and haven't won a road NEC game all year.
• Saint Francis is looking for its first NEC road win of the season after winning two non-conference games at Lehigh on November 29 and American on December 2.
• Last season, the team did not win a non-conference game on the road but was victorious three times in conference play against the three New York teams in the league.
• In the first 42 years of the NEC, the Red Flash has won at least one league road game yearly, except the 2008-09 team went 0-9.
• The seven straight road losses to start the circuit are tied for the second most in team history, tying the 1982-83 team that dropped seven consecutively to start the circuit.
• Head coach
Rob Krimmel's 2018-19 team has the most road wins for the Flash, with six wins away from Loretto in league play.
• Saint Francis has won one game in the NEC six times in team history: 1981-82, 1982-83, 1990-91, 1998-99, 2011-12 and 2020-21.
NOTE: The 2020-21 season teams played two games series at one location due to COVID-19.
• Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting in the all-time series dating back to last season. In the first three meetings, the home team was victorious.
• The Red Flash is looking for its third win in Massachusetts. The team defeated Merrimack in 2021-22 and UMass in 1980-81 in the Old Colony State. Saint Francis owns wins against Boston College (1975-76) and Boston University (1955-56), but both took place in Loretto.
• Saint Francis will wrap up the regular season at home against Le Moyne on March 2.
• The Dolphins will make its first appearance in Loretto since 1951-52.
• The Red Flash will be at home in the regular season finale for the second-straight season and the sixth time under Krimmel.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Clinch an NEC Tournament berth for the third-straight season, 10th time under head coach Rob Krimmel and 29th time in program history
• Be the first NEC road win of the year
• Be the first road win since December 2 at American
• Be the team's first win at Stonehill
• Win the season series against the Skyhawks and win two in a row against Stonehill for the first time
LAST TIME OUT
• Saint Francis dropped a road game at Merrimack 71-60 on Thursday
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn had a team-high 16 points.
• Sophomore
Gestin Liberis tallied an NEC career-high 14 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, while freshman
Aaron "Ace" Talbert also found double figures, finishing with 10 points.
ABOUT THE SKYHAWKS
• Stonehill, coming off a bye on Thursday, comes into the contest 3-25 overall and 1-12 in league play after falling 75-67 on February 17.
• All of the Skyhawks wins have come at home, including a 71-61 win against Wagner on February 3.
• Sophomore
Tony Felder paced Stonehill with 14 points against the Dolphins in the last game. Graduate student
Max Zegarowski added 13 points and nine rebounds, while freshman
Austin Abrams chipped in 10 points off the bench.
• Zegarowski paces the team with 12.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Felder (11.8 ppg.) and senior
Jackson Benigni (11.5 ppg.) also average double figures.
LAST TIME WE MET
• Freshmen
Bobby Rosenberger III and
Aaron "Ace" Talbert combined for 43 points to power Saint Francis past Stonehill 72-63 on February 10.
• Rosenberger registered a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds, while Talbert added a career-best 21 points.
•
Louie Semona paced the Skyhawks with 13 points, while
Max Zegarowski (12 points) and
Jackson Benigni (11 points) also found double figures.
• Saint Francis was coming off a bye, just like Stonehill is coming off a bye in the matchup on Saturday.
TRENDING UP
• Freshman
Eli Wilborn started his collegiate career with four double-figure point games in the 13 non-conference games. Since NEC play began, the freshman has posted at least 12 points in 11 of the 14 tilts and six games with at least 14 points. In the last 10 games alone, he has eight games with at least 13 points and five games with 16 points or more.
• In the first game of a conference week, Wilborn is averaging 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in the eight games. He did have one of his 19-point games on the first league game of the week, but that was also his birthday against LIU on January 19. In the second game of the week, the freshman is averaging 15.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and has not posted less than 13 points in the six contests.
• Digging a little deeper into the first game versus the second game of the week statistics, the Red Flash has produced all five of its 20-point performances on the first game of the week. Both of freshman
Carlos Lopez, Jr.'s games (21 vs. CCSU, January 13 and 22 at CCSU, February 1) were the week's first game. Freshman
Bobby Rosenberger III's two games were also the first game of the week (21 points vs. LIU, January 19, and 22 points vs. Stonehill, February 10), while freshman
Aaron "Ace" Talbert's career day of 21 points was also against Stonehill in the only game of that week.
• As far as splits, Lopez has the most extensive spread compared to Wilborn, with Lopez averaging 11.6 points per game in the first game of the week and 9.8 points per game in the second contest. He has three 10+ games each day, but his three games on the first day are 14 points or more.
• Rosenberger is even with 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game on the first day and 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
• As a team, the Red Flash are 3-5 in the week's first game and have won three of its last six.
• Conversely, the team is 0-6 in the week's second game. The only loss decided by three points at LIU on February 3.
• Back to Rosenberger, the freshman has posted double figures in five of his last seven. The freshman has averaged 15.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in his last four games.
• Sophomore
Gestin Liberis notched an NCAA Division I and NEC career high of 14 points and 10 rebounds against Merrimack on Saturday after tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds against Franciscan on November 22, which was three months to the day of these two totals. It was his fourth 10+ point game of the season and the fifth of his career.
