Women’s Basketball’s 2023-24 Season Comes to an End in Loss to No. 1 Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Saint Francis University women's basketball had its season come to an end in the Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinal to No. 1 Sacred Heart in a 78-48 loss.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
» Kendall Carruthers scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field. She added five rebounds and three assists.
» Yanessa Boyd scored 10 points and added three rebounds.
» Kameryn Dorsey Had a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
» Ny'Ceara Pryor had a team-high 23 points and seven rebounds for Sacred Heart.

TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME
Sacred Heart opened a 9-2 lead with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter before a 7-1 Red Flash run cut the deficit to 10-9 with 3:40 remaining. The Pioneers ended the quarter on a 9-2 run and led 19-11 after one. Saint Francis cut the deficit down to five, 22-17, two minutes into the second quarter before Sacred Heart ended the half on a 14-7 advantage and led 36-24 at halftime.
 
The Pioneers went on a 15-6 run out of the half and led 51-30 with 3:27 remaining in the third quarter. The teams each scored six points in the final three minutes of the frame as Sacred Heart led 57-36 after three quarter. Sacred Heart then outscored Saint Francis 21-12 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory and advance to the NEC Tournament Semifinal.

FLASH NUGGETS
Carruthers wrapped up her first season with 14.3 points per game. She had 21 double-digit scoring games and five games with at least 20 points. Carruthers was named NEC Rookie of the Year, First Team All-NEC and NEC All-Rookie Team earlier on Monday.
 
Dorsey finished the season with a team-high 3.4 assists per game despite playing the sixth-highest minutes per game on the team. It's the most assists by a Red Flash player since Karson Swogger averaged 4.3 per game in the 2020-21 season.

Saint Francis' season ended with Monday night's loss, while Sacred Heart advances to face No. 4 Merrimack in the NEC Tournament Semifinal.
