Water Polo Comes Up Short to Harvard in CWPA Championships

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>>Saint Francis fell to Harvard in the opening game of the CWPA Championships in a high-action 12-9 matchup.

TURNING POINT
Harvard tried to run away with the game in the fourth quarter, but the Red Flash fought until the final whistle. Early in the quarter, the Crimson scored three unanswered goals to take a 12-7 lead. Sam Eschleman (Reading, Pa.) found the back of the net to cut their lead to four. With a minute remaining, Emese Szucs (Budapest, Hungary) took a penalty shot, scoring the final goal of the game for a 12-9 final score.

FLASH MOMENTS
The Crimson got on the board first, but Saint Francis's offense kept things close. Caylah Olay (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored first for the Red Flash, taking advantage of a powerplay. Eschleman tallied another goal to give Saint Francis a narrow lead before Harvard tied the score 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.

A pair of Red Flash goals kept the score at a close 6-4 going into halftime. Szucs found the back of the net with 3:06 left in the quarter. Eschleman earned her second goal of the day on a powerplay, but Harvard maintained their lead with another goal before the end of the quarter.

The Red Flash continued to be productive on offense in the third quarter. Szucs scored her second goal early in the quarter before Harvard began to pull away. Barely able to see the net, Eschleman earned a hat-trick to narrow the score to 9-6. On a man-up opportunity, Szucs notched a hat trick of her own to keep the game within two going into the final frame.


FLASH NUGGETS
Eschleman and Szucs tied for most goals for the Red Flash with four each. Olay recorded the ninth goal for Saint Francis.

Isabel Lumley (Brisbane, Australia) tallied 11 saves between the pipes.

Saint Francis will face Bucknell tomorrow at 4 p.m. to conclude their season.
