Women's Soccer Falls To Youngstown State On The Road

Youngstown, Ohio - Saint Francis women's soccer suffered their first defeat of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Youngstown State on Thursday night. 

"This game can be cruel sometimes. Credit to Youngstown for finishing their chances." Saint Francis Head Coach Brian Diaz said. "This was a very good performance from our ladies. We deserved more out of the result than we got.".

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 

>> Lauren Pyle led the Red Flash with three shots on the night.  

>> The Red Flash outshot the Penguins 13-7 in the contest. 

>> Emma Sawich made one save in the game. 

TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME 

Youngstown State grabbed the lead with a Teagen Wahle goal in the 42nd minute. 

The Penguins doubled their lead with a goal in the 65th minute. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Saint Francis had the majority of the possession in the opening 15 minutes that resulted in several early chances. 

In the fourth minute, Raine Korpics flicked a header into the box that found the feet of Alyssa Mella, but Mella's shot carried wide. 

Just minutes later, Tomke Dziesiaty took a shot from about 23 yards out but it sailed high. 

In the 14th minute, Lily Cornwell made a great pass that found Korpics in front of goal, but her shot was only denied by an excellent save by Youngstown State's Maya Naimoli. 

A few minutes later, Cornwell had a go at goal but hooked it wide. 

In the 42nd minute, Evangelia Barakos took a shot but could not convert. 

Coming out of the half, Rory Schaeffer tried to level the match but missed high. 

Pyle registered a couple of shots after the hour mark, both were hit wide of goal. 

The Penguins had an excellent chance to extend their lead to three in the 64th minute, but Schaeffer made a goal saving tackle to keep the deficit at two. 

In the 70th minute, Mercedez Paino struck a dangerous shot that was saved by Naimoli. 

Sawich made a save on Lianna Van Sice's shot to keep the match 2-0 in the 74th minute. 

Rita Kendziora tried to cut the deficit in half in the 77th minute, but her shot was saved. 

Riley Cerqua took a shot in the 81st minute but pushed it wide. 

Pyle and Korpics would get opportunities to score in the final 10 minutes, but both had their shots denied by Naimoli. 

"We are definitely disappointed in the result but very proud of the performance." Diaz said. "This team will keep making strides forward and keep getting better.". 

FLASH NUGGETS 

Cerqua made her first start of the season. 

Jacklyn Hajnosz made her collegiate debut off the bench in the contest. 
 

UP NEXT 
The Red Flash will look to rebound when they visit Robert Morris on Aug. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
