Men’s Volleyball Defeated By No. 18 UC San Diego In Season Opener

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Saint Francis men's volleyball fell to #18 UC San Diego in the 2025 season-opening match, 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 16-25).

>> Michael Mosbacher and Brady Stump each had a team-high nine kills. Mosbacher tacked on two blocks, two digs, and an ace as well.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME
UC San Diego took the first two sets by a similar score of 25-20. Set three started out close, with Saint Francis making it a slim 11-9 deficit. The Tritons proceeded to counter with a 4-1 run to go up 15-10 at the media timeout. UC San Diego would ride the momentum by outscoring the Red Flash 10-6 the rest of the set on their way to winning the match.

FLASH MOMENTS
The opening set saw the Tritons get out to a 9-1 lead and would not look back. The Red Flash attempted to make a comeback, closing the deficit to 24-20 thanks to four kills from Stump. The rally fell short, as a service error helped give UC San Diego the 25-20 set one win.

The Tritons got out to a strong start in the second set, taking a 15-8 lead going into the media timeout. The Red Flash would respond following the short break with an 11-6 run to cut the deficit to 21-19. UC San Diego would thwart another comeback attempt after taking a timeout, as they would end the set with a 4-1 run to take set two, 25-20. 

FLASH NUGGETS
Brayden Kuruzovich and Cole Dorn each made their first starts for the Red Flash at setter and libero, respectively. Kuruzovich tallied 17 assists while Dorn registered seven digs. Kuruzovich also posted his first service ace with Saint Francis in the first set. The junior setter recorded 16 in his lone year with Missouri S&T in 2023.

Kyle Charles and Luke Bockius saw their first collegiate action. In the third set, Charles collected seven assists and one dig.

Andrew Deardorff tacked on five kills and two service aces.

Nicholas Lynch led the team with three blocks.

NEXT UP FOR FLASH
Men's Volleyball will travel to play #1 UCLA on Friday at 10:00 p.m. EST/7:00 p.m. PST. Due to the wildfires occurring in Los Angeles, the match will not be played at Pauley Pavilion and it will be potentially moved to a neutral site.
