Sportsmanship Counts: Saint Francis Takes Home Five Team Sportsmanship Awards For Second Straight Year

Saint Francis University recorded a Northeast Conference (NEC) best five Team Sportsmanship Awards. Women's soccer, women's cross country, men's basketball, men's outdoor track and field, and men's volleyball earn the Team Sportsmanship winner distinction for 2024-25. It is the second year in a row the team has won five sportsmanship awards and the third most in program history. Saint Francis and FDU tied for the most in the NEC this year with five apiece.

Women's soccer takes home the award for the third straight year and the fourth time overall (2010, 2022, 2023, 2024). It is the 11th time in NEC history a team has won three consecutive sportsmanship awards, and the Red Flash is the first to turn the trick in women's soccer.

Men's volleyball is also repeated as the sportsmanship recipient for its sport and has won two of the three times since men's volleyball was added as a sponsored sport in the NEC.

Men's basketball earned recognition for the ninth time (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2020-21, 2022-23, 2024-25) in 16 years that the league had presented the award. No other team in any sport has won more than six awards since the award's inception.

Women's cross country and men's outdoor track and field picked up their second sportsmanship honor. Women's cross country first won the distinction in 2016, while the men's outdoor track and field team gained recognition for the first time since taking the first award in 2009.

Saint Francis won eight team sportsmanship awards in 2010-11, and in 2008-09 took home six honors. The five collected in this year are tied with 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2023-24 for the third most in a single season.

Since the NEC Team Sportsmanship program was instituted in 2008-09, the Red Flash has won a conference-best 53 awards, followed by Sacred Heart (37), CCSU (35), Wagner (34),  and LIU (31) to round out the top five.

Men's basketball leads the university with nine sportsmanship awards. Men's tennis (5), football (4), women's soccer (4), women's basketball (3), women's bowling (3), men's cross country (3), field hockey (3), women's golf (3), women's swimming (2), women's lacrosse (2), women's tennis (2), women's volleyball (2), women's cross country (2), men's outdoor track and field (2) and men's volleyball (2), men's soccer (1) and men's indoor track and field (1) has garnered the honor at least once in program history.

Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
