LORETTO, Pa. - A lot has changed over the past year at Saint Francis, but on Saturday football returns to DeGol Field.
The first season of Presidents' Athletic Conference football begins with a test against Grove City. In recent years, the Wolverines have established themselves as one of the powerhouse teams in the PAC.
Grove City won the regular season title in 2023 and 2024. Last season, head coach Andrew DiDonato's team went 7-1 in the PAC and reached an at-large bid to the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
This season, Grove City is off to an 0-2 start, but don't let that record deceive you. The Wolverines opened against two ranked opponents, No. 23 Cortland (28-18) and at No. 7 Mount Union (21-17).
"Through adversity, great things can happen."
Due to the transition to Division III, Saint Francis is getting a later start to the 2026 campaign.
Chris Villarrial begins his 17th season as head coach and while he admits there has been a lot of challenges, he said he's excited that the focus in back to academics and playing football.
"After the announcement I told the guys if you want to stay, I'll be here with you," Villarrial said. "When we recruited them we said we would be with them to the end. I want them to know men can be true to their word."
The Red Wolves do return a group of players who saw significant playing time. On the offense side of the ball,
Kameron Chisholm and
Scott Raymond will make an impact in the passing game while veteran
Marcus Fennell will lead a young offense live.Â
On defense,
Gavin Hockenberry,
Grayden Lewis, and Campbell Meltzer will police the secondary, while
Kent McMahon and
Collin Glassmyer lead the linebacker corps.
There will also be a new signal caller in 2026.
Ashton Walk, a sophomore transfer from Clarion University, and
Lance Jones, a freshman from Salisbury, Pa have been battling it out in practice for the team's quarterback spot.Â
On Tuesday, coach Villarrial caught up with Pat Farabaugh for their weekly interview and what fans can expect to see on Saturday.
Champions Return - 10th anniversary of 2016 NEC Championship
As Saint Francis kicks off a new era in the PAC, the University will take time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Red Flash football team. The memorable team captured the first conference title in program history.Â
The season will forever be remembered for what coach Villarrial calls "The Drive." On a Friday night in October, quarterback Zack Drayer led Saint Francis to a fourth quarter comeback win over rival Duquesne.
Players from that team are invited back for a special tailgate and will be honored on the field at halftime.
