Derek Tyson

Derek Tyson completed his seventh season in charge of the Saint Francis University men's golf program in 2019-20.

In 2019-20, Tyson's squad was kickstarted by the emergence of freshman Marc-Antoine Hotte who was the NEC's Player of the Month in the first two months of the season and finished the season with a stroke average of 71.8.

In 2018-19, Saint Francis got strong performances at the NEC Championships from Dom Stevens and then-freshman Luke Minsky to place sixth.

In 2017-18 Tyson's squad earned a fourth place finish at Bucknell's Fall Invitational as it was led by a top-fifteen finish from Brandon Mihalo. In the spring, SFU placed sixth at the Navy Spring Invitational. Brandon Mihalo and Austin Renz earned a top-five finish and a top-twenty five finish respectively, to lead Saint Francis U.

in 2017, SFU started playing its best golf of the season down the stretch. In its final tune-up meet before the NEC Championship, SFU placed sixth in the 18-team Navy Spring Invite. The Red Flash battled hard throughout the NEC Tournament and finished sixth in the event.

Tyson's 2012-13 squad won the Northeast Conference Championship, which marked the third in program history. Derek Tyson was also named the NEC Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm. Under Tyson's watch Kevin Fawcett was named to the All-NEC first team and he was named the NEC Scholar Athlete for men's golf in 2012-13.

Tyson was tabbed to take the reins of the Saint Francis University men's golf program on May 25, 2012.  Tyson, who also serves as the head professional at the university's Immergrün Golf Club, is just the third head coach in the program's 42-year history.

"It is with great pleasure that we welcome Derek Tyson to the Red Flash Family as our new Head Men's Golf Coach and our professional at Immergrun Golf Club," said Krimmel.  "Derek's familiarity with the area and experience as an assistant professional at Sunnehanna Country Club will enable him to become immediately engaged in the operations of the course while enhancing the opportunities that are part of our golf history at Saint Francis."

"Derek is known as an excellent teacher of the game as well as a person who relates well to people and these qualities should benefit our student-athletes as well as our club members and guests."

Tyson replaced Nick Wheeler who held the position for five years before resigning after the 2012 spring season.  Wheeler took over for legendary head coach Bob Hahn who led the Red Flash for 36 years from 1970 to 2006.

Prior to his appointment at SFU, Tyson served as the PGA Assistant Professional at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa. since May of 2006.  In that position, he was responsible for coordinating hundreds of events on an annual basis while conducting both individual and group lessons.

“I would like to thank Mr. Krimmel for the wonderful opportunity at Saint Francis University," said Tyson.  "I look forward to carrying on the Saint Francis Legacy and having a very successful golf season with both the Saint Francis men's golf team as well as Immergrün Golf Club."

Tyson worked in inside and outside operations at Valley Brook Country Club (McMurray, Pa.) and Cordillera Valley Course (Edwards, Colo.) in 2004 and 2005, respectively.  In April of 2004 he served as Range Manager for Tournament Operations at the PGA Tour MCI Heritage Classic hosted by Harbor Town Golf Links (Hilton Head, S.C.).

From 2008 to 2012 Tyson volunteered as an assistant golf coach at Westmont High School in Johnstown and donated time as an instructor at the Hiram G. Andrews Center for the Blind in 2010 and 2011.

A 2007 graduate of Methodist University, Tyson earned a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management.  He was inducted into the Professional Golfers' Association of America in 2007.

Tyson has participated in the Laurel Auto Prom Am Tournament each year from 2009-11 and the PGA Tristate Assistants Championship in 2009 and 2010.
