Graduate Assistant Coach DeAngela Mathis joined the Red Flash women's basketball staff at the beginning of the fall semester in 2020.
During Mathis’ first season as a graduate assistant, Saint Francis finished with a 14-9 overall record and a 12-4 NEC record. The Red Flash strung together the third-longest win streak in program history (11-straight games) and began conference play 9-0 (the best NEC start since 2003-04). SFU earned the No. 3 seed in the NEC Tournament and concluded the season ranking fifth in the country in free-throw percentage (.791).
Mathis comes to Loretto from Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Illinois, where she served as an assistant coach in 2019-20. At Wabash Valley, Mathis was responsible for coordinating all team travel, official visits, social media content and team housing arrangements. She was also involved with in-game and practice coaching duties, opponent scouting, film breakdown, recruitment, guard and post player development.
In her season with the Warriors, the team finished with a 30-2 overall record and was a perfect 18-0 in conference play. Wabash Valley earned a No. 13 national ranking and was highlighted by an all-american selection, regional and conference player of the year, conference freshman of the year, four all-conference selections and three all-region selections.
Before coaching at Wabash Valley College, Mathis spent one season as the director of women's basketball operations at Stetson University. As the DOBO, she was in charge of team travel, food accommodations, scheduling practices, supervising student managers, organizing community service, maintaining time management plans and CARA logs and the head coach's expense reports. Mathis also composed itineraries, was the liaison to department staff members and assisted with the organization of team and elite camps.
Mathis earned her Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology from Lamar ('18) and her Associate's in Sports Medicine from Florida State College ('16). While at Lamar, Mathis was an all-conference selection in 2017-18 as the team won the Southland Conference regular season championship. She also served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Member. Mathis was named to the Dean's List both years at Lamar. While at Florida State College, Mathis was a WBCA Junior College All-American selection and was runner-up for Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year in 2015-16. She also made the all-conference team that season.
Mathis is from Bradenton, Fla. and is pursuing her master's in business administration.
