Frederick enters his third season as an assistant coach for the track and field team after head coach Douglas Hoover hired the former Red Flash sprinter to the staff in fall 2023. In Frederick’s role, he is responsible for the development and recruitment of sprinter and hurdler events.
During the 2023–24 season, Frederick guided his athletes to nine NEC Indoor finalists and eleven NEC Outdoor finalists, highlighted by David Niang’s breakout campaign—winning the NEC 60m hurdle championship, earning IC4A runner-up honors in the 60m hurdles. Niang went on to complete the double within the NEC, winning the 60m hurdles and 110m hurdles this year as the senior hurdled into the NEC history and Saint Francis record books. Niang advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Championships after clocking a lifetime best of 13.92 in the 110m hurdles as he won the outdoor IC4A 110m hurdle championship.
Building on that success, the 2024–25 campaign saw continued success for the squad, producing six NEC Indoor finalists, including runner-up finishes in the men’s 60m and women’s 500m. Sophomore Sarah Colman broke a 21-year-old record in the 600m at our first indoor meet of the new year, and rookie Olivia Renk concluded our 2025 indoor season with a school record in the women's 200m, which stood since 2012, with a time of 24.73 to earn All-East honors.
Rolling into outdoor season, Frederick coached and led the group to earn four NEC finalists, capped by Julian Saunders' double conference titles in the 100m and 200m, where he set a new school record in the 200m before advancing to the IC4A Championships. Saunders concluded his senior season as the victor at the IC4A Outdoor Championship meet in the 100m while earning All-East honors in the 200m as well!"
Prior to Frederick’s hiring, he was an assistant coach and graduate assistant at Seton Hill University from 2021-23. He was in charge of the development of sprinters and hurdlers. In his two years with the Griffins, he contributed to 27 qualifying marks in indoor/outdoor sprint and hurdle events along with two runner-up finishes in the 200 and 400-meter races during the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Frederick coached sprinter Joseph Piper, who broke the Seton Hill 200m record with a time of 21.66 during the 2023 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He also coached Andrew Campbell to a 10.86 mark in a 100m race, good for second in program history.
During his time at Seton Hill, Frederick earned his Master of Education in Innovation Instruction.Â
Prior to Frederick’s coaching career, he was an accomplished sprinter for the Saint Francis track and field team from 2017-21, holding school records in the indoor and outdoor 200m. He accumulated 15 All-Northeast Conference (NEC) outdoor/indoor team selections, holds seven top-10 marks on the all-time record list, 2019 NEC Outdoor Most Outstanding Track Performer in sprints, and 2018 NEC Outdoor Most Outstanding Rookie.
He was also a part of the 2019 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field NEC Championship, finishing first in 100m, 200m, and being a part of the 4x100 relay team.
While at Saint Francis, Frederick received his Bachelors in Science in Social Work.
Hoover on Frederick: "I'm thrilled to welcome Chris back to Loretto. He is well-prepared for his new role on our coaching staff. He had a tremendously successful career here as an undergraduate student, and his coaching experience the last two years has prepared him to lead our sprinters and hurdlers. He's going to do great things here."
