SFU Men’s Soccer Off To 2-0 Start in NEC Play After Win at LIU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2007) – The Saint Francis men's soccer team got two first half goals and junior goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, CA/Arroyo) (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) stopped five shots in a 2-0 victory over Long Island in Northeast Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash were the beneficiary of an own goal in the sixth minute, and then senior defender Bryan Maguire (McAllen, TX/Memorial) (Glasgow, Scotland / Memorial) tallied his first career goal in the 32nd minute to put the match out of reach.

Senior Jarron Brooks (Mitchellville, Md/Archbrishop ) (Mitchellville, Md. / Archbishop Carroll) had a hand in the game's first goal as he sent a ball toward the net off a corner kick. An LIU defender attempted to clear the ball but his header was redirected past senior goalkeeper Alex Fatovic for an own goal.

In the 20th minute, the Blackbirds (2-5-2, 0-1-1 NEC) had their best scoring opportunity of the match. Junior Mohammed Mashriqi struck a ball from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar and deflected harmlessly away to a Saint Francis defender.

Maguire gave the Red Flash a 2-0 lead at the 32:35 mark as he headed a corner kick from junior Brian Murphy (Newbury, OH/West Geauga) (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) off the far goal post and into the net.

Saint Francis improved to 4-5-1 on the year, and 2-0 in the Northeast Conference for the third time in school history. The Red Flash will try to make it 3-0 in NEC play for the first time in school history when Fairleigh Dickinson visits at 3 p.m. on Friday. SFU will also play host to Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
