Saint Francis’ Astronomical Offensive Output Earns Flash Third Win in Final Four Tries

Philadelphia, Pa. – Sophomore running back Calvin Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/South High School) (Cleveland, Ohio/South) and the rest of the Saint Francis Red Flash picked the LaSalle Explorers to pieces as SFU earned their first winning road record (3-2) under head coach Dave Opfar's six-year tenure by a winning score of 51-10.

Saint Francis re-wrote the record books in this record-breaking offensive performance. The Red Flash cracked the top five for SFU's bests for a single game in nine different categories. The offense set the highest offensive output ever with 562 total yards on the day. Calvin Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/South High School) ran for 243 unreserved yards on the ground, earning him a fifth place spot in the books for rushing in a game. The 376 total yards rushing for the offensive efforts place fourth all-time.

The other six categories in which new team and personal bests were created were Longest Touchdown Run (2nd place - 85 yards by Williams), Most Touchdowns Rushing in a Game (T-1st – 3 TDs by Williams), Most Touchdowns Passing (T-2nd – 3 by George Little (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne) (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne), Most Extra Points (T-1st – 6 by Adam Sciulli (Pittsburgh, Pa/Central Catholic) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), Most Points in a Game (2nd place – 51 points), and Most Points in a Quarter (T-3rd – 24 points in 3rd quarter).

The defensive side of the ball snuck behind the line to take down LaSalle's quarterback, Steve Panasuk, six times; one sack shy of tying the school record for sacks in a game. The Explorers only mustered 165 total yards on 64 plays against the well-oiled machine that is the Red Flash defense.

On a final personal note, Scott Lewis (South Fork, PA/Bishop McCourt) (South Fork, Pa./Bishop McCort), the freshman linebacker who came into the game as the third leading tackler in all of Division I-FBS with 13.3 tackles per game, did not lead the Red Flash in tackling after doing so in four straight games. Lewis made 5.5 stops, 0.5 sacks, 1.5 TFL, and one pass break up in his final game as a first-year player. Lewis finished the season donning the red and white with 125.5 total tackles on the season; notching him a fifth place all-time ranking for tackles in a season in Saint Francis folklore.

Saint Francis opened the first frame on their initial drive with a 3-play, 63 yard drive in just 0:40 seconds. Williams made carries of 14 and 12 yards, in that order, before sophomore snap-handler George Little (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne) struck freshman receiver Omar Winston (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland South) (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland South) for his career long catch of 37 yards for the score. Adam Sciulli (Pittsburgh, Pa/Central Catholic) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) had his extra try blocked, spoiling his 100% PAT rate on the year. Sciulli was the last remaining kicker in the Northeast Conference boasting a perfect PAT conversion ratio.

LaSalle went three and out, turning the spotlight to the Red Flash. SFU created some extra work for the athletic communications department in next year's media as Williams ran for the second longest play in Saint Francis history on an 85-yard bolt on the first and only play of SFU's second charge. Sciulli made it a 13-0 affair with 12:43 left to go in the first quarter after Williams' record-setting blast up the middle.

The Flash defense stood tall again, forcing Explorers' punter Anthony Perlozzo to boot a 42-yarder to Rivera, down to the SFU 27-yard line.

Saint Francis marched 73 yards in 8 plays to convert their third touchdown in three possessions as the Red Flash offered a healthy dose of freshman running back Jude Yearwood (Elkridge, Md./Howard) (Elkridge, Md./Howard) and a couple heaves from Little heave before he finished off the Explorers' goal line stance himself with a 1-yard jump into the endzone. Sciulli lengthened the gap to 20-0 with 6:02 left to play in the opening quarter.

Perlozzo came on for the punt 4 plays later after another unsuccessful Explorers charge. LaSalle finally had some luck swing their way as SFU's Little imparted with the pigskin at the Saint Francis 38-mark; the ball was then scooped up by Ryan Bricker at the SFU 32 for LaSalle's best field position of the quarter.

The turnover piloted the Explorers first score of the game, a 22-yard Steve Panasuk – Shane Kendrick touchdown connection with 3:23 remaining in the first stanza. Perlozzo's extra point made it a 20-7 match.

The preliminary quarter came to a close as the Explorers pulled another fumble off the carpet after Yearwood dropped the ball at LaSalle's 34-yard line. Brandon Gallman made the pick-up as the first quarter ended with a 20-7 tally.

SFU's second turnover gave way to LaSalle's second score. Perlozzo put a 26-yard field goal through the uprights at 10:49 of the second quarter, cutting the Flash's lead in half, 20-10.

The Red Flash found paydirt for the fourth time of the match, this time, via Antoine Rivera (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro -BCIT) (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) hauling in a 39-yard pass from Little's arm at 8:22 of the second stanza. Rivera's sixth touchdown of the season brought Sciulli on for the PAT, extending the lead to 27-10.

Rivera almost topped his 39-yard score with a punt return for a touchdown as LaSalle's special teams assumed their duties. Rivera was tripped up at the LaSalle 8-yard line for a 41-yard return. On the subsequent play, Williams earned his second score of the game, on an 8-yard dart to give the Flash a 34-10 advantage after Sciulli's successful PAT.

Williams' continued his career day with a 56-yard touchdown at 4:50 of the second, his third and career high for touchdowns in a single game. Sciulli pushed it through, giving the Flash an insurmountable 41-10 lead.

Saint Francis' 24 points in the fourth quarter ranks T-3rd all-time.

The defense once again filled their role on LaSalle's ensuing drive, as freshman cornerback Robert Horne (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) made his first interception of the season off of Panasauk with 4:14 remaining. After the pick, a 3rd and 9 situation was appeased on a 19-yard catch by Rivera, bringing the ball down to the Explorers' 14-hash stripe. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't bang it in again, and Sciulli came on to convert a 29-yard field goal with 1:10 left in the half. Sciulli's 27th career field goal was the cap on a 44-10 lead heading into the second half.

Freshman defensive back Brent Sanders (Pasadena, MD/Severna Park) (Pasadena, Md./Severna Park) tallied his first career interception as time expired in the first half of play.

The third quarter did not embrace any scoring. Little lost a fumble for the second time of the game to give the Explorers offense a shot at redemption heading into the fourth quarter. Daniel Parker inked the fumble recovery.

Saint Francis' seventh and final touchdown of the game came from another Rivera reception. Rivera's 23-yard touchdown grab, his second of the day, ended the scoring for this young and promising Red Flash offense.

After Rivera's second touchdown and George Little (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne)'s third touchdown pass, T-2nd all time for a single game in the SFU chronicles, the Red Flash won their third game out of the last four, all on the road, by a final of 51-10.

“I can't say enough about how our team came into this game and did everything they needed to do to guarantee a victory. The new records are nice, but I'm happier about the future. Each and every player on this team that will be back in Loretto next year certainly has a bright future in store for them,” Opfar stated.

Saint Francis earned their first winning road record (3-2) under Opfar, achieving victory in three of their last four games, outscoring their opponents 109-60 in those three wins. The Red Flash closed out their season on an extremely high note in record-breaking fashion by finishing with a 3-7 record for their 2007 schedule.
