Red Flash Can't Solve CCSU Defense in 1-0 Defeat

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2008) – After a slow start, the Saint Francis men's soccer team played strong for the final 65 minutes, but came away with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Central Connecticut State on Friday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.

Robert Cavener scored the game's only goal off a cross from Hadji Diop at 6 minutes, 55 seconds. Diop received a long pass and dribbled into the lower right corner of the 18-yard box. His cross went to the far post where Cavener was able to head the ball into the left side of the net from eight yards out.

The Red Flash dropped to 4-10-2 overall, and 1-5-1 in the Northeast Conference. They will return to action on Sunday when Quinnipiac comes to town for a 1 p.m. tilt on Senior Day.

Defender Jon Guse (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) (Chandler, Arizona / Hamilton) and goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, CA/Arroyo) (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) will be honored prior to the game for their four years of service to Saint Francis University.

Williams stopped four shots in Friday's contest against CCSU, including several outstanding chances. However, SFU couldn't solve the Blue Devils' defense.

Freshman Sean O'Reilly (Front Royal,Va./Seton) (Front Royal, Va. / Seton) had the first good scoring chance for the Red Flash in the first half when he struck a ball from nine yards out that CCSU goalkeeper Paul Armstrong was able to knock away.

With 8:17 to play in the second half, sophomore Brent Brockman (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) shot just wide on an opportunity from 15 yards out.

CCSU held a 17-8 advantage in shots, and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The Blue Devils were called for 20 fouls, while Saint Francis committed 17.
