Red Flash Fall in Three Sets Against Big East Foe West Virginia

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2008) – Senior Kristin Buter (Bowie, MD/Bowie) (Bowie, Md. / Bowie) tallied 11 kills, 10 digs and one ace, but the Saint Francis women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback against Big East foe West Virginia on Friday night at DeGol Arena.

 

Junior Rikki Myers (Noblesville, IN/Westfield) (Noblesville, Ind. / Westfield) dished out 28 assists, junior Shirley Miller (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) (Fairless Hills, Pa. / Pennsbury) added eight kills and had two aces, and senior Keshia Gibbs (Dumfries, VA/Forest Park) (Dumfries, Va. / Forest Park) had six kills and two blocks.

 

The Red Flash dropped to 8-17 overall, and will try to get back on track with a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday against NEC rival Long Island.

 

West Virginia jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first set, only to see the Red Flash rebound with a 7-3 run to take a 12- 11 edge. However, the Mountaineers took advantage of several SFU mistakes on their way to a 9-3 run for a 20-15 advantage. Saint Francis couldn't bounce back and dropped Game 1, 25-17. Abby Raines led the way with five kills in the set for West Virginia. Miller had four kills for SFU, while Myers and Greenwalt added two each. The Red Flash hit just .047 in the game with the Mountaineers hitting .200.

 

Saint Francis performed better in the second set with a .158 hitting percentage, but West Virginia turned up the heat itself. Buter had six kills on 11 swings and Myers dished out 12 assists. However, the Mountaineers turned an 11-11 tie into a 15-11 lead by winning four straight serves. They never looked back in building a lead as big as six points. WVU took the set 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

 

West Virginia opened up a 10-3 lead in the third set on its way to a 25-16 victory to clinch the match, 3-0. The Mountaineers had five service aces in the game.
