PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 26, 2008) – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team traveled to the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday, but came away with a tough 3-0 loss against Ivy League foe Brown.
Sophomore Rachel Capizzi (Saint Louis, Mo./Mehlville) (Saint Louis, Mo. / Mehlville) had a team-high 11 kills to go with 5 digs in the tough 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 defeat.
Junior Shirley Miller (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) (Fairless Hills, Pa. / Pennsbury) had 8 kills and 13 digs, and seniors Keshia Gibbs (Dumfries, VA/Forest Park) (Dumfries, Va. / Forest Park) and Kristin Buter (Bowie, MD/Bowie) (Bowie, Md. / Bowie) each had 7 kills. Gibbs also had 2 blocks, while Buter added 10 digs.
The first game was a back-and-forth battle much like the other two sets. The teams were tied at 19-19 before the Bears went on a 6-3 run to take it 25-22 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Saint Francis came out strong in the second set and held a 23-21 lead over Brown in the race to 25. However, the Bears came out of a timeout and reeled off four consecutive points to schock the Red Flash 25-23.
SFU battled in Game 3 and was right in the thick of things with a 21-21 tie, but Brown again closed it out on a four-point run to take it 25-21.
The Red Flash will try to bounce back with a 10 a.m. match against Xavier on Saturday. They will also play tournament-host Stony Brook at 4 p.m. later in the day.
