PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 27, 2008) – After falling behind 2-0, the Saint Francis women's volleyball team battled to within reach of forcing a fifth game, but Xavier escaped with a 3-1 win on Saturday at the Stony Brook Invitational.
Following the 25-15, 25-12, 21-25, 25-22 loss against Xavier, the Red Flash dropped a 3-0 decision against the tournament-host Seawolves.
In the day's first match against Musketeers, who were an NCAA Tournament participant last season, junior Shirley Miller (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) (Fairless Hills, Pa. / Pennsbury) had 10 kills and 20 digs, while senior Kristin Buter (Bowie, MD/Bowie) (Bowie, Md. / Bowie) and sophomore Rachel Capizzi (Saint Louis, Mo./Mehlville) (Saint Louis, Mo. / Mehlville) also added double digits in kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
Senior Keshia Gibbs (Dumfries, VA/Forest Park) (Dumfries, Va. / Forest Park) contributed 6 kills, a .278 hitting percentage and 2 blocks, senior Kayla Greenwalt (Colorado Springs, CO/Widefield) (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Widefield) hit .364 with 5 kills and 3 blocks, and junior Rikki Myers (Noblesville, IN/Westfield) (Noblesville, Ind. / Westfield) added 35 assists.
Against Stony Brook, Miller had team-highs with 9 kills, a .208 hitting percentage and 10 digs in the 25-13, 25-22, 25-12 defeat. Buter had 7 kills, an ace, 5 digs and 2 blocks, and Gibbs added 5 kills and 4 blocks.
The Red Flash will try to get back on track when they open Northeast Conference play on Sunday with an 11 a.m. contest against St. Francis-NY at DeGol Arena. SFU will also face Bryant at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
