LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 30, 2008) – Freshman forward Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount) redirected a shot off the foot of fellow classmate
Andrew Pedigo (Plano, TX/Plano) (Plano, Texas / Plano) into the net to help give the Saint Francis men's soccer team a relieving 1-0 overtime victory over Howard on Tuesday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex.
Junior
Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys) (Christchurch, New Zealand / Shirley Boys) received his first assist of the season on the game-winner by McLeod at 98 minutes, 2 seconds. Moir started the play with a great cross on a corner kick. He sent to the ball to the far post, where Pedigo got a leg on it. McLeod then headed the ball in from four yards out to give the Red Flash their second straight overtime home victory.
SFU has now won three straight matches to improve to 3-5-1 on the season. The Red Flash will now take the next nine days off before traveling to Monmouth for their Northeast Conference opener at 3 p.m. on Oct. 10.
Saint Francis had a dominating performance against the Bison. The Red Flash held a 24-4 advantage in shots, and a 13-2 edge in corner kicks, the last of which resulted in the game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada / Sentinel Secondary) made just one stop for his second career shutout. Sophomore
Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield) and junior
Omo Sumah (AccoKeek, MD/Gwynn Park) (AccoKeek, Md. / Gwynn Park) had four shots each, while McLeod and sophomore
Owen Gombami (Pumula North Bulawayo, Simbabwe/Mzilikazi) (Pumula North Bulawayo, Zimbabwe / Mzilikazi) had three each.
Gombami's final shot of the match came just 2:16 into overtime, and was perhaps Saint Francis' best chance of the contest prior to the game-winner. Moir sent a pass to sophomore
Brent Brockman (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) into the right corner. Brockman sent a perfect low cross to the near post, where Gombami one-timed a hard shot targeted for the lower right corner. However, Howard goalkeeper Adisa Bekoe made a diving stop near the post to preserve the 0-0 score.
The Bison had their best chances of the match in the opening minutes of both halves. At the beginning of the game, Guilherme Fonseca found himself on a breakaway on the right side of the box. Motazed slipped and fell as Fonseca dribbled into the box, but he recovered in time to stop his shot from 12 yards out just 2:34 into the game.
SFU's best opportunity in the first half came off the foot of McLeod. Moir and freshman
Victor Jiminez (Kitchener, Canada/Forest Heights Collegiate Institure) (Kitchener, Canada / Forest Heights Collegiate) started the play, and Jiminez' cross found McLeod at the left post, but his one-time was stopped by a diving Bekoe with 5:45 to play in the half.
Howard's Lemuel Lyons had a shot at a wide open net 3:24 into the second half after Motazed came more than 20 yards out of the net to try to punch the ball away with most of the players in SFU's offensive zone. But Lyons was able to get the ball past Motazed and had an open look at a wide open goal, but he shanked the ball wide left off his left foot.
Brockman narrowly missed on a shot from 25 yards out with 11:08 to go in the game. He fired a hard shot targeted for the lower left corner, but it scooted just wide to keep the game scoreless.
