FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Jamie Dixon (Revloc, PA /Central Cambria ) (Revloc, Pa. / Central Cambria) blasted two home runs and had a career-high five RBI to spark the Saint Francis softball team to an 8-3 victory over Colgate on Saturday, during the second day of the Florida Gulf Coast University Spring Break Tournament.
Earlier in the day, Bryant scored two first inning runs and held the Red Flash scoreless in a 2-0 contest.
Saint Francis moved its record to 2-7 on the season, and will return to action 1 p.m. Sunday when it takes on tournament-host Florida Gulf Coast.
Saint Francis 8, Colgate 3
Sophomore Raquel Rugani (Montour, PA/Montour) (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) started a second inning rally which helped SFU stake an 8-0 lead in the 8-3 win over Colgate. She led off with a single, while senior Hilary McNelis (Tyrone, PA /Tyrone) (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) reached on an error. Dixon then came to the plate and hit her first home run of the season, driving home her two teammates to put the Red Flash up 3-0 in the second.
After hitting a single in the third, Stephanie Griffin (Dupont, PA /Pittston Area ) (Dupont, Pa./Pittson Area) stole second. Griffin then scored while senior Kelly Slingwine (Gibsonia, PA /Pine Richland) (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) reached first on a fielder's choice. Kara Stroup (Valencia, PA /Mars) (Valencia, Pa./Mars) followed that up with a single and then stole second. She went on to steal home before Dixon hit her second home run of the day as Saint Francis scored five runs in the inning to bring their total to eight.
Senior pitcher Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, PA /Bellefonte) (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) gave up seven hits and walked one on the day to move to 1-1 this season. Rugani finished the afternoon 2-for-3 after adding another single in the third. Dixon was also 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Janelle McCoy (New Paris, PA /Chestnut Ridge) (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) also had a hit for the Flash with a single in the second.
Bryant 2, Saint Francis 0
Bryant's leadoff hitter Laura Bowen was hit by a pitch and then went on to steal home to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead early on before Allison Chouinard scored on a throwing error to put Bryant up 2-0 at the end of the first. Slingwine had a single in the first and a double in the fourth to go 2-for-3 on the day. Rugani also singled in the first and again in the fifth, giving the Red Flash two more hits. Freshman pitcher Megan Layne () gave up just four hits and walked one in seven innings.
