FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to hand the Saint Francis softball team a tough 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon to wrap up play at the host's Spring Break Tournament.
The Red Flash dropped to 2-8 with the loss, and will take Monday off before traveling to Orlando to play eight games between Tuesday and Saturday. Saint Francis will next face Fairfield and Detroit Mercy at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, on Tuesday.
Senior Hilary McNelis (Tyrone, PA /Tyrone) (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) gave the Red Flash a 1-0 lead with an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth inning. Senior Kara Stroup (Valencia, PA /Mars) (Valencia, Pa. / Mars) singled, and freshman Courtney Francis (Jefferson, Ohio / Jefferson Area) came in to pinch run and score the go-ahead run.
However, Florida Gulf Coast finally got to senior pitcher Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, PA /Bellefonte) (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) in the top of the seventh inning. Caldwell gave up two runs on six his in the complete game effort.
Juniors Kelly Cortese (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) (Coatesville, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) and Jamie Dixon (Revloc, PA /Central Cambria ) (Revloc, Pa. / Central Cambria) both had singles for SFU.
