WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth used a six-run fifth inning to take a large lead and then held on for a 7-1 victory over the Saint Francis softball team on Monday morning.
The game was a completion of a suspended game on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks completed a two-game sweep of the Red Flash to improve to 13-6 overall, and 3-1 in the Northeast Conference. SFU fell to 13-18 overall, and 1-3 in the NEC.
After 31 games on the road, or at neutral sites, the Red Flash will play a pair of doubleheaders this weekend in the comfort of Red Flash Softball Field. Saint Francis will play host to Sacred Heart beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Fairleigh Dickinson will come to town for a 12 p.m. twinbill on Sunday.
Freshman Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia) recorded SFU's only two hits in the game, and added an RBI.
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the game, which began on Sunday. However, darkness and fog forced the game to be suspended in the third inning.
The teams took the field at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, and the Hawks scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Smith drove in Saint Francis' only run with a seventh inning, two-out single.
