The St. Francis softball team swept Fairfield and Detroit Mercy by scores of 10-2 and 9-6 as they began play at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Florida.
In the first game against Fairfield, the Flash took an early lead as they scored two quick runs in the top of the first inning. They continued to rally throughout the game, adding one more run in the third inning before closing the game with four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, PA /Bellefonte) (Bellefonte, PA / Bellefonte) pitched a one-hitter for the Flash, holding Fairfield hitless and scoreless until the seventh inning. Caldwell recorded nine strikeouts on the day.
The St. Francis offense was led by Kelly Cortese (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) (Coatesville, PA/ Bishop Shannahan) and Kelly Slingwine (Gibsonia, PA /Pine Richland) (Gibsonia, PA/ Pine Richland). Cortese went 2-5 with three runs scored. Slingwine was 3-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Both Cortese and Slingwine eached added two stolen bases apiece.
In game two against Detroit Mercy, the Flash offense was relentless as six of the nine Flash starters recorded multiple hits, accumulating a total of 16 in a complete game effort. Janelle McCoy (New Paris, PA /Chestnut Ridge) (New Paris, PA/ Chestnut Ridge) led the offensive effort, going 3-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.
Jerrica Smith (Breezewood, PA /Everett) (Breezewood, PA/ Everett) picked up the win on the mound, recording four strikeouts. Smith pitched a complete game.
