HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Kelly Slingwine (Gibsonia, PA /Pine Richland) (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine Richland) and junior Jamie Dixon (Revloc, PA /Central Cambria ) (Revloc, Pa. / Central Cambria) drove in four runs apiece to lead the Saint Francis softball team to a 10-1, Game 1, five-inning mercy rule victory on Friday afternoon at Quinnipiac.
However, the Bobcats kept the Red Flash offense in check in Game 2 to earn a doubleheader split with a 4-0 win.
SFU moved its record to 18-21 overall and 5-5 in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash will return to action at Noon on Saturday when they travel to Central Connecticut State for another NEC twinbill.
Slingwine slugged two home runs in Game 1 to bring her season total to seven, which is tied for the team-high with Dixon.
Dixon made it 2-0 in the second inning with her seventh long ball of the season, and Slingwine later added a three-run shot to give SFU a five-run inning.
The Red Flash matched the five-run explosion in the fifth inning when Slingwine led off with a homer. Freshman Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia) added an RBI double, and Dixon made it 10-1 with a two-run single and a steal of third base and home plate.
Senior Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, PA /Bellefonte) (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) gave up just one run on one hit, struck out three and walked one in the complete game victory. Smith was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Quinnipiac used a three-run first inning and strong pitching to get by SFU, 4-0, in the second game. Katie Allendorfer hit a three-run homer in the first, and Heather Schwarzburg tossed a three-hitter to keep the SFU offense in check.
Slingwine, junior Kelly Cortese (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) (Coatesville, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) and senior Kara Stroup (Valencia, PA /Mars) (Valencia, Pa. / Mars) accounted for three singles for the Red Flash.
