Caldwell And Slingwine Spark Flash To Doubleheader Split at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Seniors Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, PA /Bellefonte) (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) and Kelly Slingwine (Gibsonia, PA /Pine Richland) (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine Richland) provided the sparks in leading the Saint Francis softball team to a Game 1, 7-1, victory at Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon. However, the Bison struck early in Game 2 and earned a doubleheader split with a 6-3 defeat of the Red Flash.

SFU moved its record to 17-20 on the season, and will return to Northeast Conference action with doubleheaders at Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Caldwell took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of Game 1, while Slingwine went 3-for-4 with four RBI from the leadoff spot. Caldwell gave up just one seventh inning run on four hits, struck out five and walked one in the complete game win. Slingwine fell a triple shy of the cycle and slugged her fifth home run of the season.

Saint Francis scored one run in the third inning, but broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, including a grand slam from Slingwine. Junior Jamie Dixon (Revloc, PA /Central Cambria ) (Revloc, Pa. / Central Cambria) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while junior Stephanie Griffin (Dupont, PA /Pittston Area ) (Dupont, Pa. / Pittston Area) had a walk, a single and scored two runs.

The Red Flash jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in Game 2, but the Bison answered right back in the bottom half of the first inning and went on to score five runs in the fourth inning to put SFU on its heals, 6-1. Dixon led off the sixth inning with a double to spark a two-run rally, but Saint Francis wouldn't get any closer in the 6-3 defeat.

Senior Nicole Waligora (Johnstown, PA /Westmont Hilltop) (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) had a single and double in three at-bats, Slingwine had a triple, and senior Janelle McCoy (New Paris, PA /Chestnut Ridge) (New Paris, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge) had a double and an RBI.
