Owen Gombami (Pumula North Bulawayo, Simbabwe/Mzilikazi) (Pumula North Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Mzilikazi) each headed in a goal and
Darius Motazed (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) (North Vancouver, Canada/Sentinel Secondary) played solid in goal as the Saint Francis men's soccer team shut out the Duquesne Dukes 2-0 for their first win of the season on Monday afternoon at the Stokes Soccer Complex in Loretto.
The Red Flash, who move to 1-2 overall, will play the University of Maryland – Baltimore County at eh UMBC tournament on September 10. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
The two teams traded shots to start off the game but remained scoreless for the first 17 minutes. With 28 minutes remaining in the half,
Sean O'Reilly (Front Royal,Va./Seton) (Front Royal, Va./Seton) sent a pass across the box to Butler, who headed it in past Dukes goalkeeper Chris Torres to put SFU up 1-0.
Saint Francis secured the win less than10 minutes into the second half.
Parnell Hegngi (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha Catholic) (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha Catholic) crossed a pass to Gombami, who headed the ball into the corner from 10 yards out, to put the Red Flash up 2-0 with 35 minutes left to play.
Solid work in net by Motazed, who had four saves on the day, would secure the 2-0 win for Saint Francis.
Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) (Dunedin, New Zealand/Bayfield) led the SFU offense with three shots. He was followed by Gombami, who ended the game with two attempts. The Red Flash were out shot 14-11 by the Dukes.
Ben Horner led Duquesne with three shots, one of which came on goal. Torres made two stops for the Dukes.
