HAMDEN, Conn. (Oct. 10, 2010) - Sophomore outside hitter
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) had a career day, but it was not enough for the Saint Francis women's volleyball team to overcome the Quinnipiac Bobcats as the Flash fell 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 20-25) in Hamden.
Zahumensky was all over the floor for the Red Flash, posting a career-high 16 kills and adding a team-high 17 digs in addition. The sophomore, pressed into duty at outside hitter earlier in the 2010 season, has now posted two consecutive matches of double-digit kills.
The Red Flash used strong hitting in the first set to take a 1-0 advantage for the second consecutive match. Zahumensky sparked that offense with a dazzling performance, recording nine kills on 11 swings with no errors for an .818 hitting percentage in the first stanza. After taking the lead 12-10 on a Lizzy Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) ace, the Red Flash never looked back. They built the lead to five on a Zahumensky kill, and Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) (York, Pa./Dallastown) sealed the 25-21 set win with a kill.
In the second set, the two teams kept it tight for most of the early going, with the Red Flash holding the late lead at 17-16. However, the Bobcats took the lead and were able to control the rest of the set for a 25-21 win. Never again would the Bobcats even trail the Red Flash, as Quinnipiac took a pair of close 25-20 sets to seal the 3-1 win.
Zahumensky had the team lead in kills (16) and digs (17), and also added one block. Wingard ranked second on the team with 10 kills and hit a sterling .588 in the match. Williams posted six kills and also added a team-high six blocks, while senior opposite Lindsay Malloy (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) had six kills and seven digs. Freshman outside hitter Leeanne Haus (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny) (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny) had 15 digs, second only to Zahumensky.
