Red Flash Rally For Pivotal NEC Win Over Terriers

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2010) – After playing from behind for most of the first set, the Saint Francis-PA women's volleyball team rallied for a win in the set on its way to a 3-0 sweep of St. Francis-NY on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena.

Sophomore Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) (North Bend, Ohio / Saint Ursula) had a team-high 17 points with 12 kills, 5 blocks and 2 service aces in the 26-24, 25-18, 25-18 win.

The Red Flash improved to 6-17 overall and, more importantly, 4-6 in the Northeast Conference. SFU sits in fifth place, just one-half game out of the fourth, and final, playoff spot. Saint Francis will return to action next Saturday at Bryant.

“This was a very critical win for us today,” said Saint Francis University head coach Chuck Mullen. “The team showed a lot of heart coming off yesterday's loss and responded in a very positive way. We did a good job of using our strengths to our advantage, particularly in our middle attack and blocking.”

Williams hit .524 for the match with her 12 kills on 21 swings. She had just one hitting error. Sophomore Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area) hit .360 with 11 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks, senior Lindsay Malloy (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) (Gallitzin, Pa. / Penn Cambria) had 9 kills and 2 blocks, and freshman Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) (Clarion, Pa. / Clarion) added 38 assists. Sophomore Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport Area) also had 8 kills and 9 digs.

SFU trailed for all of the first set, and fell behind by as many as five points at 19-14. However, the Red Flash won five of the next serves to pull within 20-19. The Terriers had a chance at set point with a 24-23 lead, but Malloy had a big kill to tie it at 24-24. Wingard followed with a kill, and a bad set by SFC gave SFU a 26-24 win in the first stanza.

Saint Francis led most of the second set in taking control with a 25-18 victory. The Red Flash took control in the third set with an 11-1 run to open it up. St. Francis-NY rallied to pull within 13-10, but never got any closer as Saint Francis would win the third set by an identical score of 25-18.

Marina Georgieva had a team-high 12 kills for the Terriers, while Maria Kashavelova had 19 assists.
