LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2010) - The Saint Francis women's volleyball team have gotten back to their winning ways at DeGol Arena, earning their second straight Northeast Conference victory with a convincing 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-11, 26-24) performance against the Bryant Bulldogs in Loretto.
With that win, the Red Flash improve to 4-13 overall, with a 2-2 record in the NEC and a 3-1 record at DeGol Arena in 2010. Bryant falls to 13-8 overall, with a 1-3 record in the Northeast Conference.
The win was a complete effort, with the Red Flash line-up giving consistent production from top to bottom. The Flash hit just .145 over the course of the match, but their superb defense (a combination of 64 digs and 7.0 team blocks) and a general, intangible determination was the difference.
That said, senior Lindsay Malloy (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) authored one of best individual performances of the 2010 season. Malloy had a match-high 18 kills to go with nine digs and an astounding eight service aces, which is tied for the most aces in a single match in school history. The majority of Malloy's damage was done in the Red Flash's dominant third set, when she posted six aces and five kills on just eight swings.
The first set was a tight battle, as the Bulldogs seemed to need some time to get up to speed at the beginning of the match. When they did, though, they played very well, committing just three errors and playing high energy defense. That fast-paced style of play began to take its toll as the Red Flash continued to press the issue, with Saint Francis head coach Chuck Mullen saying he felt his team was on the verge of a breakthrough.
"I figured if we could keep the intensity up, we'd eventually force them into errors and wear them out," said Mullen.
That theory would ring true in the second set; with the teams tied at 15-15, the Red Flash would pull away on a 10-5 set-closing run to take the 25-20 win. The third set was SFU's to lose as Malloy served 10 consecutive points, starting at 7-7 and eventually ending the run at 15-8.
Freshman Leeanne Haus (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny) (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny) had strong third and fourth sets, posting seven kills between the two sets and playing excellent hustle defense. Haus finished with 11 kills overall, as well as seven digs and one block.
Chrissy Breisch (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) had a team-high 17 digs. Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) got the start at setter and recorded 43 assists.
