SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Oct. 30, 2010) - In a match crucial to potential seeding in the Northeast Conference playoffs aft the end of the season, the Saint Francis women's volleyball team fell 3-1 (18-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22) to the Bryant Bulldogs in a conference clash in Smithfield.
The Red Flash fall to 6-18 overall, 4-7 in the Northeast Conference. Bryant improves to 16-14, 3-8 in NEC play.
The Bulldogs would take control in the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-18 and 25-20. The Red Flash hit just .158 and .091 in those sets, respectively, compared to identical .250 attack percentages for the Bulldogs. The Flash would briefly hold leads in both sets, but they were unable to break through against Bryant.
In the third set, however, the Red Flash utilized a strong rally of their own to bring themselves back into the match. Trailing 10-8 in the middle of the set, the Red Flash went on a 10-1 run that included four blocks and a service ace. Four of those blocks came from sophomore middle Lizzy Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula), who also contributed a kill in that stretch. The Red Flash would go on to win the set 25-21, hitting .276 compared to the .000 of the Bulldogs.
However, the Bulldogs went coast-to-coast in the fourth set, taking the match with a 25-22 win.
Lindsay Malloy (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) had the match-high in kills for the Red Flash, posting 17 kills in the loss. Malloy also added seven digs and three blocks. Williams finished with eight kills, seven digs, and six blocks.
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) was the only other Red Flash player in double-digits in kills, posting 10. Chrissy Breisch (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) had a team-high 16 digs.
