Red Flash Fall 3-2 To CCSU In Back & Forth Clash

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Oct. 31, 2010) - The Saint Francis women's volleyball team traded the first four sets with Central Connecticut State, but the Red Flash ultimately fell just a bit shy in a 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 12-15) loss to the Blue Devils at St. Joe's Gym in Connecticut.

The Red Flash fall to 6-19 overall, with a 4-8 record in the Northeast Conference. Central Connecticut State improves to 5-6 in NEC play, 8-16 overall.

As previously stated, the two teams traded the first four sets, with the Red Flash drawing first blood with a 25-18 win in the first. Hitting a sparkling .357 in the first set, the Flash posted 13 kills with just three errors. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils hit a flat .000, and the Red Flash forced side-outs on 84 percent of CCSU's serves. The set was tied at 16-16, but a string of Blue Devils errors gave SFU a 9-2 run to end the set.

CCSU would take the second set, but the Red Flash made what at first appeared to be a blowout a close affair. After the Blue Devils jumped out to a 14-4 lead, the Red Flash recorded 18 of the next 24 points to actually take the 22-20 lead on a Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) (York, Pa./Dallastown) kill. The Blue Devils would take the win, though, on an Emily Cochran kill.

The Red Flash would again use a red-hot offensive attack to win the third set, hitting a blistering .433 to take a 25-20 victory. SFU opened with a Lindsay Malloy (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) and allowed just one tie, when CCSU made it 1-1. The Red Flash went coast-to-coast without allowing the Blue Devils to take the lead, taking the set on a Lizzy Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) ace.

However, the Blue Devils bashed away at a .321 clip in the fourth set and led all but one point to win 25-18, and rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Flash 15-12 in the decisive fifth set. The Flash pulled as close as 14-12, but the Blue Devils put it away.

Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had a bounce-back match with a team-high 16 kills and a sterling .583 hitting percentage, also adding five blocks. In fact, four Red Flash players ended up with five blocks: Wingard, Williams, Malloy, and Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) (Sarver, Pa./Freeport). Malloy (15) and Williams (12) also reached double-digits in kills. Chrissy Breisch (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) had a team-high 21 digs. Logan Meinert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) had 45 assists.
