LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 6, 2010) - Playing their final home game of the season, and celebrating both Senior Day and Homecoming, the Saint Francis football lost to the Bryant Bulldogs by a score of 48-10 on a gray, cold day at DeGol Field.
Saint Francis falls to 1-8 overall, 1-5 in the Northeast Conference. Bryant improves to 6-3 overall, 3-3 in the NEC.
The Bryant defense set the tone for the game early in the first quarter. After the Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead on a Jordan Brown touchdown run and a Chris Bird extra point, they intercepted SFU quarterback John Kelly (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) on the very first Red Flash offensive play. The pick was returned to the SFU 13, and four plays later Bryant's Mike Canfora made it 13-0 with a one-yard touchdown plunge. This time, though, Bird's kick would fail.
The interception was one of five turnovers committed by the Red Flash in the game.
It look as though things were beginning to turn in favor the Red Flash early in the second quarter, starting with Bryant's first drive of the stanza. Red Flash linebacker Matthew Parker (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) deflected a Mike Croce pass high into the air at the Bryant 31, which Scott Lewis (South Fork, PA/Bishop McCourt) (South Fork, Pa./Bishop McCort) camped under and caught for his first interception of the season.
Four plays later, with the Red Flash facing a 4th-and-3 from the Bryant 24, Kelly hit receiver Anthony Howze (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) on a five-yard completion to give the Red Flash a fresh set of downs. Kyle Harbridge (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) (Easton, Pa./Easton), in his first game back from injury, rushed 11 yards get the Red Flash inside the Bryant 10. However, the drive ultimately resulted in a Josh Thiel (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) field goal to make it 20-3.
The Bulldogs, however, would continue to turn up the pressure, and added another touchdown before halftime to make it 27-3.
The Red Flash would find the end zone in the fourth quarter, though, thanks to a strong kickoff return from freshman receiver Dane Domonkos (Windber, Pa./Bishop McCort) (Windber, Pa./Bishop McCort). Domonkos took a kickoff 69 yards to the Bryant 20. Jude Yearwood (Elkridge, Md./Howard) (Elkridge, Md./Howard) would take four straight carries, eventually running into the end zone untouched from seven yards out. Thiel's extra point made it 48-10.
Defensively for the Red Flash, there was one career milestone reached and another just barely missed. Parker finished the day with a game-high 15 tackles to give him 421 for his career; that moved him past Colin Disch's (Albany) 416 for fourth-most all-time in NEC history. Next on the list for Parker is James Noel (Robert Morris), who finished his career with 437 career stops. Parker also added a sack, a forced fumble, a quarterback hurry, and a pass deflection.
Meanwhile, classmate Scott Lewis (South Fork, PA/Bishop McCourt) remained on the outside looking in - just barely - in his quest to become the second player in NCAA Division I (FCS) history with 500 tackles. Lewis recorded 12 stops to reach 499 for his career, also added a tackle for loss and an interception.
Also with strong days for the Flash were freshman cornerback Jerome Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley), who had a career-high 10 tackles, and Kaena Moose (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School) (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School), who finished with four tackles and 1.5 TFL.
