CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2010) – The Saint Francis softball team went toe-to-toe with Toledo for eight innings, but the Rockets scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Red Flash 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Charlotte First Pitch Classic.
Saint Francis had six hits in the game, including two by junior Raquel Rugani (Montour, PA/Montour) (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour), who smacked her third home run of the tournament. Freshman Kayla Trinkle (Northampton, Pa. / Northampton) picked up her first career RBI in a pinch hit situation.
Sophomore Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (Vallejo, Calif. / Rodriquez) pitched 34.0 innings on the weekend with Saint Francis being short on players.
SFU, who has yet to practice outside due to the snow pack in Pennsylvania, finished the tournament with a 1-4 record, and hit .285, including a .500 average by Rugani, a .438 average by sophomore Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia), and a .429 average by freshman Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash. / Wilson).
The Red Flash will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the Florida Gulf Coast University Spring Break Invitational. They will play Georgia Southern at 9 a.m. on Friday, and Villanova at 1:30 p.m.
