Tournament-Host FGCU Holds Red Flash Offense in Check

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 28, 2010) – The Saint Francis softball team struggled to get its offense going in a 2-1 loss against tournament-host Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at the FGCU Spring Break Invitational.

 The Eagles scraped together a run in the fifth and got a solo home run in the fifth inning. The Red Flash were held without a base runner until sophomore Courtney Francis (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) (Jefferson, Ohio / Jefferson Area) singled with one out in the sixth inning.

Two freshmen teamed up for Saint Francis' only run in the seventh inning as Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif. / Temescal Canyon) led off with a single and eventually scored on a single by Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash. / Wilson).

Sophomore Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (Vallejo, Calif. / Rodriquez) gave up two runs (one unearned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out five and walked two in the start. Freshmen Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif. / John F. Kennedy) 2.0 scoreless innings in relief.

The Red Flash will have Monday off before returning to action at 9 a.m. on Tuesday versus Maine, at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.
