ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 2, 2010) – The Saint Francis softball team rallied for the tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 3-2 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games.
Senior Stephanie Griffin (Dupont, PA /Pittston Area ) (Dupont, Pa. / Pittston Area) slapped a sacrifice bunt to plate sophomore Katelyn McMellen (Kingsville, Ohio / Edgewood) with the tying run, and then freshman Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif. / Temescal Canyon) hit an RBI single through the left side for the walk-off victory.
The Red Flash improved to 3-7 on the season, and will return to action with two games on Wednesday. They will play Valparaiso at 1 p.m., and then Dayton at 3 p.m.
After surrendering two runs in the first inning, SFU scored three unanswered runs in the game.
Freshman Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash. / Wilson) walked with one out in the second inning, and then scored on a double by fellow freshman Heather Stiglich (Newhall, Calif. / William S. Hart) to make it 2-1.
Sophomore Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia) and Griffin had two hits each for Saint Francis. Sophomore Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (Vallejo, Calif. / Rodriguez) picked up the win by giving up just two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out two and walked three.
