DOVER, Del. (Mar. 20, 2010) – Sophomore Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (Vallejo, Calif. / Rodriguez) and freshman Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif. / John F. Kennedy) combined to pitch 14.0 scoreless innings to lead the Saint Francis softball teams to a pair of victories on the first day of the Delaware State Demarini Capital Classic.
Layne struck out seven and walked just one in a five-hit, 2-0, win over Rhode Island in the first game of the day, and Gurrola struck out three, walked five and surrendered six hits in a 3-0 victory over tournament-host Delaware State.
The Red Flash, who have now won four straight games to improve to 7-12 on the season, will play two more games on Sunday. First up will be Binghamton at 9 a.m. before the team plays in either the consolation or championship game later in the afternoon.
Layne got all of the offense she would need when sophomore Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia) hit an RBI groundout to plate junior Courtney Francis (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) (Jefferson, Ohio / Jefferson Area) in the third inning.
Smith led off the sixth inning with a double, and scored when junior Raquel Rugani (Montour, PA/Montour) (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) reached on a fielding error.
Layne's strongest threat came in the second inning when the first two batters reached base for Rhode Island, but she got three straight outs to work out of the jam.
SFU got all of its offense with a three-run rally in the sixth inning of its win over the Hornets. Freshman Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash. / Wilson) led off with a walk, and was pinch-ran for by freshman Misty Hammel (Oakville, Ontario / Holy Trinity). Rugani walked and freshman Kayla Trinkle (Northampton, Pa. / Northampton Area) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with nobody out. Gurrola came through with the game-winning RBIs with a two-run single to open the scoring, and freshman Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif. / Temescal Canyon) delivered a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0.
